GAS CAP!!

Postby drj » Fri Jul 07, 2006 8:54 pm

is it just me - or does everyone occasionally have to fish out the parts of the gas cap (rubber seal - metal insert) from the neck of the tank...

ive been lucky so far - but one of these days that damn thing is gonna go ALL the way in - and then ill be up the creek - with no bike.

am i missing something - or am i just a bonehead?

Mine tends to fall out after i remove it from the tank. It seems as if the rubber is a bit small for the cap. I may get keyed cap from bsa.

yes we understand next time you have a day off

take the tank off and drain the gas turn tank upside down and using a dental Mirror and wire with a small hook go fishing for it
tank needs cleaned out any way if bike is more than a couple years old

ps i drive a school bus so i speak high school english

the only problem with that suggestion is that the metal cap is the EXACT SAME SIZE as the opening itself...

my plan is to get a hold of it with some pliers - crush it - then extract it...and i probably wont be replacing it.

i dont think i needed it to begin with...(a very silly part indeed)

i mean really - a metal cap that ISNT attached to anything that also happens to be just small enough to drop inside the tank...NOT TOO SMART!

Do I understand you right, you have a metal part in the fuel cap? Mine Baghira doesent have this, and as I brought the bike brand new I dont think it was ever fitted. The rubber part does come out of the cap sometimes, but to date I havent had a real problem with it.
Handsome jack, the blue adjusters on the fork tops are standard on the top of the front forks on the normal height Baghira. They are not fited to the reduced height Baghira and the Mastiff. I am sure the rubber footrests are not standard on the normal height Baghira though. I reckon Yamaha parts could be fitted though.

metal part

Postby DAVID THOMPSON » Fri Jul 14, 2006 6:12 pm

the metal part may be a one way air valve...
it lets air into the tank and air is let out of the system
via the charcoal canaster fitted to usa sold bikes as needed
ie as a cold gastank heats up setting in the sun in the morning
but may not be on a bike in other areas ie keith had none on his in the uk ????

either way - the dang thing was a bad idea from the get go...

my dirt bike also has an acerbis tank - but that doesnt have a metal cap - and they both have a breather hose...lame.

c'est la vie!!

David's right, and Keith's right. It must be some EPA / USA stuff. Mine is just a standard-type Acerbis plastic cap with a rubber gasket.

either way - its gone now...and it WILL NOT be replaced...

so the question is - what happens to an aluminum cap that sits in a gasoline bath for a while???

will it foul up my fuel lines...?
will it decay and gumm up my carbuerator...?
or is it not THAT big of a deal...?

i dunno. runs fine for now.
