Better headlight for the Skorpion Sport

One thing I noticed during my road trip -- http://www.mzriders.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8193 -- was that the stock headlight is too dim and yellow. I would like to get something that is brighter.

The manual specifies H3 12V/55W-PK22s. Is that all the info I need to get a bulb? What is better for motorcycle use - halogen, LED, or...?

Can anyone recommend a particular model / product that will surely fit the Sport?

A common mod is the Yamaha trx850 light as it fits straight in. See if that's any good?

I don't remember the TRX850 in the US. You guys across the pond always get the nice bikes...

Found a couple of options on Ebay:
MZ Skorpion headlight shell
Kinda expensive, but rare, so I guess you gets what you pay for...
This one takes H-4 bulbs. Use a Silver Star bulb...plenty of white light. That is my set-up on my Traveller.

TRX850 headlight shell
Also takes the H4 bulb, but it probablyfocuses the beams to the "wrong" side of the road.
From the UK. Hard to say what shipping would be.

Also, could try these:
H3 Silver Star bulbs
I am a fan of the Silver Stars.

I have run both standard bulbs and the Silver Star. Silver Star has much better light (for me, anyway), but burns out a bit quicker.

The trx also ran in Europe so if one was bought then buy it from maybe Germany.
Picture two is Skorpion sport (and also Yamaha fzr400 I think)
Picture three is trx850. Bolts straight in!

I did the swap and the improvement isnt huge to be honest.

Not a great bike to ride at night, my old ETZ is much better.

Do you have relays wired in to the headlight high and low beams? If the headlight power is running through the handlebar switch, then it could be that you have a voltage drop at the headlight. I'd wire in a pair of relays (one for each beam) controlled by the handlebar switch with power directly from the battery. Eastern Beaver sells a "plug and play" kit:

Its more down to a poor pattern on the ex TRX headlight than power. If it went to the right places it would be better.

My trx850 light was shite , I have fitted a 90/130 watt bulb it's now ok it's better than my etz headlight so fitt a better bulb.

You don't have to take off the fairing, but it sure is easier. The plug is almost touching the fairing mount on mine (right on center-line). Looks like the mount was designed for the dual bulbs.
You "can" change it, just cramped.

Well the bike went in for MOT and the light spread was so awful it failed.

I have put in another TRX headlight i had to hand and it was much better in terms of its pattern. I suspect the old one had a problem.

For my next trick i shall put t in a relay and more powerful bulb. It will need a relay as when i put a similar bulb in my /7 BMW. It damaged the wiring.

relays are best on the 1970's bmw the h4 bulb will ruin the wire harness and switches in short order
i put a relay in my r90s before it left the dealers shop
when it was brand new
while i was working there we did it to all the new bikes
nothing quite like a dark night in West Virginia to make you like BIG relays...

Try an LED bulb conversion kit, I`ve used them on my Mastiff and they give a fantastic light for minimal power drain on the electrical system and run cool.
I got mine on line from Ebay, they came with a variety of base adaptors, H4, Bosch Ba20d etc. so will fit just about anything, the LED unit is pre wired and labeled HI-LO-Gnd. and easy to install.

Eric, Which unit did you purchase/use? I am considering swapping for a TRX unit on my Traveller, but your method sounds interesting. For the electrical experts...if it works for a Mastiff, would it work on my Traveller/
