...so what engine Do I have?

Postby GTCarlos » Tue Dec 30, 2014 6:09 pm

Hi All,

Still hacking away at my new '98 Skorpion. I'm finding it has had some VERY bad service over it's life. After assembling the top end and re-installing the engine I got about a mile on it on it then something stopped solid. I thought it was a seized engine but it turned out to be some sheared bolts grinding up the stator (I hadn't opened that side cover to inspect in there).

I'm trying to buy a new stator but I can't confirm what part it takes. Here in the USA few know the MZs and the Yamaha dealer doesn't have reference books for anything called and XTZ660. My local Yamaha dealer is neither friendly nor helpful so I'm looking on line for parts.

So to my simple question,.. What engine is in my '98 Skorpion Traveler? XTZ660, Raptor, 3YF, YFM? Help!

Thanks and Happy New year to everyone.

It is a 659cc 5 valve XTZ four stroke. It retains the bike trailee gear cluster as opposed to say the SZR which came with a different gear set.
All the best

///My local Yamaha dealer is neither friendly nor helpful so I'm looking on line for parts. ////

it's the dealers liability insurance he is probably not covered if its odd stuff like an engine not made for the USA
market or his workers are not trained on the stuff

where i live they will change the tires but i have to take the rims in removed from the bike...

and there is a sign on the wall that says
"look close at the location of all
spacers and washers
when removing and installing wheels"

dave

the first 3 numbers of the engine number tell what it is
on most bikes is near. where the clutch cable goes into the engine on the right side

Hi All,

Thanks for the info. With your help I've learned a lot but I'm also getting frustrated! I've spent decades maintaining old Ducatis and an odd lot of orphaned MVs, Parillias, etc. I've always been able to find parts, if they existed, and install them. Now I have a 'modern', Yamaha powered bike and... zip. Can't find the parts or even identify them. My last query, What engine I have?, was so I'd be able to find a stator but since it's not a US spec engine, I haven't been able to get ANY leads on the parts I need.

The story so far...
I bought the bike as an abandoned project a few months ago. I made some repairs with your collective help and guidance, put it together. I test rode it 1.6 miles before the engine "seized". Arrgh! On further examination I found that it wasn't seized but that an allen bolt had sheared, jamming the rotor against the stator and chewing up the latter. (Fortunately for my ego, that was not an area I had touched on the bike). No problem I think. Go get a Yamaha stator and bolt it in. No Such Luck!

So another question arises: Doe anyone have a cross reference / part # to a stator I can get here in the States? Does it fit one from a Raptor, Rhino? Virago? SRX or anything I can get from my (US) dealer or preferably on-line?

Thanks, best regards and Happy new Year.

No idea if there is a direct fit USA replacement. I followed my usual search pattern for when I'm looking for that elusive part...

On-line search for cross-references in parts fiches found this:
1990 Yamaha XT 600E stator: 3TB814100000
and
1996 Yamaha XTZ 660 Tenere stator: 3YF814100000
Part numbers are exactly the same except for the engine numbers.
Checked Ebay USA and UK. Found a few examples. Checked the pictures and they at least look the same.
One seller in the UK lists the XT600 and XTZ660 in the fitment lists.
Ebay UK listing for XTZ 660 stator

If I could find one for an XT 600 used and at a good price, at least try it to see if it fits.
Or find one from Europe and prepare for the sticker shock when you see the shipping costs...
Good luck,
