oil????

Hi all , So im browsing the internet looking for knowledge on the baggy and started investigating the engines origins.
anyway . I came across a thread that had me pondering what it meant and thought i would through it to the board.
the thread contained this statement to a knackered engine," i bet he put standard motorbike gear oil in it ",The emphasis i
think was "GEAR OIL" ./Luckly for me when i did my oil change i purchased my oil for a yamaha dealership so what ever i got must have been ok.
SO is there a story here regards type of oil for the 660 engine.dry sump a clue

i thought the engine oil on these was also the transmission oil
but mine has been parked a lot so i never really noticed
but i promise i will work on it this winter
