MZ ETZ 300 - Wiring??

Postby Inverlew » Tue Jul 08, 2014 2:46 pm

Hi Folks, this Is my first post!

I've just bought a non runner MZ ETZ 300 year 1990 - I think, most of the wiring has been replaced with a home made effort which is a mess and does not work, also there are some spade connectors on the ignition points back plate that have snapped off through corrosion.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram I can follow or does anyone have any suggestions regarding repairing or replacing the points back plate? Hope someone can help....

I suspect this will be the first of many requests for help as there is much to do on this old bike, I'm not sure what do with the bike and cant decide between café racer or flat tracker! Cheers and thanks in advance for any help you can offer, Lew

As for the backplate it really depends whats damaged. try posting a picture and we can see if it is repairable

This is the broken connection, any suggestions? The connector is loose on the backing plate.

OK that's one of the Alternator stator connections. I would first suggest checking the phases. If memory serves, you want to check the continuity between the 3 terminals ( 1&2 2&3 and 1&3) if you have a multimeter they should all be around the same figure. and make sure none of the terminals short out to ground. If all seems OK I would be tempted just to clean up round the terminal plate and work some araldite ( other epoxy adhesives are available) into any gap. Change the blade on the wire, and you should be good to go

IF you want to replace the connector plate it is available from Germany but P&P is often a killer

Also worth contacting http://www.themzshop.co.uk/ see if they have one, or can get one.

Then you have to work out how to get the old one off, and re-rivet the new one

Good luck Lew ....my son and I have just started on a rough '88 ETZ300. It will be interesting to see which way you decide to go with your project. I've got another couple of Cafe projects on the go but I quite like the high bars on the MZ ....seem to suit the tank shape more although when you see the racing MZ's on track they do look pretty cool! What part of the UK are you?

Hi Jimmy
Im in Beauly in the north of Scotland where are you?

I still not sure which way to go with mine just trying to get it running just now, i will post photos and keep you posted. Ive not seen that many 300s around it seems tobe mostly 250s.... quite a rareity! Im pretty impressed by how basic they are constructed Ive never had an MZ before and opened up the carb last night for the first time - theres nothing to them, its amazing really. A breath of fresh air compared to balanced banks of Mikunis!
Cheers, Lew
