ES250/2 engine swap/parts interchange

Postby nibbler » Thu Jun 26, 2014 3:08 pm

Hi folks. My '68 ES250/2 is sick. The motor has already been well overbored and my engineering guru thinks we'll have to fit a new liner (which he can have made) or source a replacement barrel instead. My questions to you learned MZers are thus:

Does anyone sell a new replacement barrel/piston set for this machine?

Will the barrel from a TS250 or ETZ250 swap direct onto my Trophy?

Will a complete TS250 or ETZ250 engine/gearbox fit into the ES250 frame?

I'm more interested in riding the thing than originality!

All clues gratefully received - thanks.

I have definitely seen several ES250's over the years with 5 speed engines fitted. I assume the rear mounting line up, but I'm not sure from memory if the 5 speed crankcases have mounting holes at the front, or if some other arrangement has to be devised. You would also end up with redundant mounting points on the head, which I guess could be removed or disguised by careful use of an angle grinder if such things offend your aesthetics!

It's something I would dearly love to do myself as I ran an ES250/2 in the early eighties for a while. I loved the style and the handling, but just couldn't get on with the four speed box, which to me seemed like a five speed box, with third missing. So, an ES250/2 with a five speed engine and an MZ-B 12 volt conversion would be pretty much my dream MZ!

PS. I'm sure I've seen five speed engines with four speed heads, so it's possible the barrels are interchangeable. ETZ barrels will not fit a five speed engine however, so I assume they wouldn't fit a four speed either.

Thanks, I will see if I can find a suitable 5-speed engine. Making up brackets etc won't be a problem, I'm good with cardboard and my buddy is good with metalwork! I'd rather keep her original but if spares turn out to be a real problem it just makes an engine swap even more attractive. I'm hoping that someone who has done such a swap might come across this thread as their experience would prove useful! Thanks again, your comments are appreciated. Cheers.
