what lube ?

Postby MichaelTorre » Fri May 09, 2014 1:13 pm

We have enclosed chains on our bikes.
What do I lube the chain with to ensure a long life ?

I don't see how grease will work after it gets flung to the corners
of the covers.......and gear lube will make a runny mess.

Paint a thin coating of gear oil on the chain, it works just fine.Gear oil is sticky and the long chain hydrocarbons have extra strong bonds at a molecular level that helps it to stay on the chain and not fling off. ( Ho Ho what about that for true bullshite)
Yes if you drench the chain with it it will run off and make a mess the secret is the thin coat.
If only one bike was enough..............

Some how, I am under the impression
that I have to have enough lube in that cavity,
that it's circulating keeping the chain "damp" with lube.

huge amounts of grease on it NO
do take the cover off and lube once in a while

its a great idea except on a lot of bikes the thing never gets serviced till it fails

and the chain proper adjusted so it does not ware the rubber covers

Seems then I am over thinking it.
I am a bit of a fuss budjet, so the fastidious adjustments are no big effort.
I can use standard chain lube and keep it well maintained.

the big deal is proper adjusted chain
so it does not ruin the rubbers
extra grease helps
but its also a fire hazzard
