ETZ Shock Absorber Rebuild

Postby Andy_C » Mon Mar 10, 2014 2:17 pm

Slowly fettling the 301 that I bought a while back, got around to looking at the rear end and find that one of the shocks is leaking.

Some say they can be rebuilt, some say not.

Anyone any comments / experience of rebuilding them ?

Thanks.

Alternatively Guesi who inhabits these forums has got the damper elements for €42.40 each in chrome, or €34 in black http://www.mzsimson.de

Or ost2rad have a pair of shocks complete from around €80 http://www.ost2rad.com/MZ-Spare-Parts/Suspension-Telescopic-front-fork/page=3

Pop the spring off so you can take a look at the damper rod. If it's pitted, cut your losses and replace the damper unit - therealche's links will sort you out.

If its just the seal that's failed, they're very rebuildable. Hagons certainly AREN'T the answer unless you've money to burn on unnecessary (and arguably not as good) replacements.

It's worth at least changing the oil (even if not doing the seal) of the non-leaking one too. What's in there, after twenty odd years, won't bear much relation to what went in there when they were new.

Thanks for everyones comments / links.

I'll take a close look at the dampers rods and if not pitted replace the seals assuming that I can source some !

I want to hold back on to much expense as it is "only" a hack bike, but I still want it to be a decent ride.

The thread therealche has linked to contains some fairly in-depth waffle from me about how to take them apart, most of which I'd forgotten until I read it just now!

I did another pair soon after, and filed two flats on the other end of the butchered socket, to make it easier to hold in the vice, but otherwise, they were just the same.

The 10x19x7 seals came from either an online bearing factor or eBay. Can't remember which, now, but they were very cheap!

Quite a satisfying little job, really!
