another oil question

Postby MichaelTorre » Thu Feb 27, 2014 1:36 am

I am Casting about looking for a plentifull supply of two stroke oil to run in my 1974 es 250 MC.
The Walmart super tech is tempting at nine bucks a gallon and the Pennzoil is tempting at 12 bucks a gallon.
They're listed as suitable for water cooled moters , outboard boat motors.

What say you ?

I am loath to plunk down 15 bucks a quart for this synthetic stuff at the
bike dealerships uh call me old fashion but that seems a little ridiculous.
For what its worth the "super tech" has a rating of TC-3.

And I am not going to pour 30wt crank oil in my gas, unless it is the
end of the world as we know it.

Unless I am all wet I , plan to mix it at 30/1 ratio, and richen the mixture to balance the temperature.

30 /1 is too much oil..
With every cheap oil you can go to 50/1.
More oil only means more not-burned oil dropping out of the exhaust , piston rings that don´t move free because of oil coal .

The old philosophy:the more oil the better is not true .It never was...

I was under the impression that 50/1 ratio was synthetic oil territory?

Beginning with the ES 250/2 models in the 70s MZ gave a ration of 50/1.
In the 70s most of the MZ drivers could not even spell the word " synthetic " :-)

For ETZ 250 MZ gave a ration up to 100/1 when using a special oil (in this case Castrol Bio-lube), which was a synthetic oil :-)

So with normal oil 50/1 is no problem, with synthetic oil 60/1 or 70/1 should also be no problem.

Important is that the upper conrod bearing/gudgeon pin bearing is a needle bearing, and not a bronze bushing.
And this was changed to needle bearing beginning from the ES 250/2 models...

I wouldn't use boat oil.

TC-W3 has an additive pack designed for water cooled (cool running), low revving, constant speed outboard motors.

Bike engine, even MZs, will fall outside of the operating envelope of that oil, damaging your engine. However, there's no need to go to a full synth oil, anything JASO-FB or later will do fine at 50:1 (or 33:1 if you have a plain bushed small end).

Even "expensive" oil is cheap compared to an engine rebuild. Worked out on a per-mile basis the difference in oil cost in negligible.

...........so then I have to find a good chain saw or weed Wacker oil ( and these
are considered throw away any items in this land).
wow....what to do..........

The high dollar bike dealer oil adds $4 to a tank of fuel. Not economical in my estimation.
at 50/1 ratio I should be able to find a reliable product on the auto store shelfs and
avoid the " bike boutiques".
Does anybody have reccomendations ?
