Seized Engine.

Postby kevmead » Thu Feb 13, 2014 6:10 am

Hi all,
After a bit of advice, i have recently been given a 96 plate etz 251 off a friend in bits. The engine has seized from being stood in the garden for a few years and i was after the best advice to try and un-seize the engine without a lot of expense. I have had tried tapping the piston with a bit of wood after filling it with oil but no luck. Any help would be appreciated as i am not that clever with engines to be honest.

Many thanks,

Kev :D

a long soak with liquid wrench and if it does not move then
its a lot of work with a Dremel Tool
when using the wood block remember that both the piston and rings may be stuck
and a piston that has been beat on with a wood block and hammer will damage the ring groves
if it took a lot of pounding
a new piston and rings need to be on the shopping list
at rebuild

Try filling the cylinder with a 50/50 mix of acetone and atf (automatic transmission fluid). Let it soak for a week or more and see if that helps to break it loose.

Two to try
1) Diesel . Just keep filling it up with diesel for a week,Give it a healthy tap... then repeat. Worked for me on a couple of well seized engines
2) Heat around 100ml of oil to smoking heat, then pour into the combustion chamber. Seems counter intuitive but I knew someone that swore by it. Something to do with thermal shock. Mind you if you have soaked in something inflammable before I would stand well back!

Wotcha.

The ETZ I recently bought had seized due to standing. A mixture of diesel and penetrating oil down the plug hole, then heat the barrel with either a blowlamp or a hot air paint stripping gun. When the barrel is smoking nicely, put the bike on the centre stand, engage top gear and give the back wheel a good turning. This freed up the engine of the bike I'm using now . . . . .hasn't done it any harm ( yet ).

when one sticks on me i like to take it apart and clean it up inside

an old BMW /2 is bad about dampness behind the valve seats in the humid wx we have here
and needs to have the spark plug removed and warm it up for a few hours or even a few days
so when it starts it does not pop the seats out .....from the steam pressure

seen this happen several times here in the valley

do take it apart for a good look
make sure you did not break a ring or mess up the piston

Pleased you got it free,
if you are ever out on the road and get a seizure put the bike in gear and push it backwards. Its worked for me in the past when the piston was seized and I could stand on the kick start to no effect and I am a fat bloke ........
If only one bike was enough..............
