Fuses for MZ ETZ 125

Postby tstwebdesign » Tue Dec 03, 2013 1:40 pm

Hey, I am looking at getting some new fuses for the MZ ETZ 125 and wondered what kind/size/amp I need?

If anyone could find any on ebay I would be eternally grateful.

I'll post pictures of the project when I'm done :)

A search on eBay for "continental fuses" will bring up loads of them very cheaply. Otherwise known as ceramic fuses, but that will bring up a load for household plugs as well, and they're usually made of plastic rather than ceramic these days anyway! I'm not sure on ratings off the top of my head. I *think* they might be 20A for both battery connections, and 10A or 15A for the others.

If I were you though, I wouldn't bother with this type, as they can be a bit unreliable, and tricky to get hold of if you need replacements when out and about. I'd replace the whole fuse box with a blade type. They can be had very cheaply, and the fuses themselves cost buttons. If you get a box with a couple of extra positions you could always use them for spare fuses!

Thanks for the tip, it's a massive help. I thought about getting the new fuse box but the cheaper the better to be honest. I'll probably use the ceramic ones for now and replace the box when I've replaced all of the wiring and when the fuses blow.

I've seen somewhere that it's:

2 x 16amp (main fuses)

1 x 4amp (indicator fuse)

1 x 2amp (charging fuse)

such as on here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MZ-ETZ-125-25 ... 4171081842
But obviously if I could find out the exact ones I need and how many I can order more for backups.

Is there any way of definitely checking?

Those are "GBC" fuses, used in vintage VWs and Mercedes among others. I've bought a variety pack made by Buss here in the 'States, not sure what y'all get on that side of the pond.

Two 16A for main circuit
one 4A for indicators
One 2A for alternator excitor circuit

As in the kit on eBay.

The problem with the old style fuse boxes is that the fuses are now plastic not ceramic. Extra resistance where the fuse meets the holder can cause the fuse to overheat, and shrink, overheat a bit more, shrink a bit more, and drop out.

So plastic ones would be better?

Do you know if they sell them in normal DIY/electric shops in the UK (If that's where you're based)?

Need them by this weekend :)

They're normally available in a small overpriced blister pack in motor factors shops - Pearly whatnots, or whatever they're called. They cost a lot more like that than the large packs on eBay though. (and make the blade fuse option seem more tempting! ;) )

Oh don't remind me. I borrowed a mates BMW.. a R75/5 possibly and had to change a fuse. I'm sure if you are a gynecologist it's easy. A few months later, it ended up in my basement, and was rewired completely and fitted with a proper fusebox with blade fuses under a sidepanel. Well it was good practice for wiring my Guzzi a few months later
