Here's the latest. It still won't go.
Tonight I have put the meter onto the coil (electronic) and it was reading 5.7V with the ignition on and 6.2 at the battery. Aha - I thought it is leaking Volts somewhere so I wired my other coil directly to the points from the battery to cut out all the other wiring and got a nice fat spark on the head but it still would not fire up. Is there any way to tell if I'm getting a spark under load rather than just when the plugs are out and on the head?
My head hurts again...

Yes did! It was the points cam had come away a bit and it was effectively opening twice - I had the timing all to cock as a result. Took someone more cleverer than me about ten minutes to suss out.
Nowadays it is wearing an MZB kit so no more points to worry about!

good to hear.
Mine was just completely flooded, after 2 days of kicking with no carb, exhaust or plug it finally sprang into action.
Now the kickstart seal is leaking !

My ES/2 starting problems were centred mainly around carburettor settings,
it turn out the float level was too high which meant the engine flooded
even on just the first kick.
Even with the carby set up correctly starting is still a bit of an art form, no more than 2 kicks
with the choke on and then no choke and a bit of throttle.
In the end I fitted a Bing carburettor which seems to have a much better choke arrangement,
this allows the engine to start and continue running with the choke on with no flooding.
I changed the condensor and the charging regulator and after that the 6V ignition
system worked fine.
Nick.
