Auto Advance

Postby neddyo » Wed Oct 30, 2013 2:21 pm

Hello All,
Does anyone know if it's possible to fit the ignition auto advance
to my ES 250/2 which at present has the fixed timing set up.

Thanks,

Nick in OZ

It would have originally had the auto advance so it can be fitted. However it doesn't serve much purpose and just introduces more places for wear! I think it was meant to make starting easier, but I have never had any problem starting any MZ with fixed timing

Thanks therealche,

A friend has a bike exactly the same as mine and he starts his with no problems,
but he is a lot younger and can give the kicksart lever a decent prod.
I find with my feeble effort it kicks back a lot whick does my arthritic hip no
good at all.
I changed to a bing carby whick seems to have a much better choke arrangment
and doesn't flood as easily.
Cheers, Nick.

How about selling me your ES150, I'm sure it would suit
my biking needs better than the ES250.
Hows your knee shaping up.
Best Regards,
Nick.

The MZs aren't for sale, they are my pension plan! The knee is pretty good now so next year I'll be back on two wheels ... been a long time off.

If your bike is kicking back when you start it then the timing is probably a bit out anyhow. I just can't remember which way it is at the minute that causes kickback but someone will know very quickly. Get your timing set to 2.5mm BTDC and see how you go from there. Alternativley MZB it - not a cheap solution at over 200 quid but it will make for easier starting, no points to wear out and much better lights with 12v power.

Thanks Stogadog and Dave.

I set the ignition with a degree chart at 22.15 and checked it a couple of times,
but I will check it again.
I fitted an electronic regulator, but apart from the kick back everything else is working fine.

Cheers, Nick.

22.5 fixed may be a bit much a lot of fixed timing engines are set at 20 deg before tdc i have a big onan flat twin that's 20deg bf tdc
starting it with a pull rope is a do not try that

i installed a boyer system for a r90s 1974 on it at about 1 deg after tdc and it rope starts and runs great at 1800 rpm
at about 3000rpm its between 25 and 30 deg before tdc

its ran by radio control to charge batteries on a radio repeater at a remote location when the power company lets us down
electric start and propane ...fuel and instruments watched on a tv set about 10 miles from repeater sight
saves road miles in the middle of the night

Thanks Dave,
I realy like the idea of an electronic set to
give a retarded static timing for starting.
There is one for the MZ, could be the answer.

Cheers, Nick
