BAGHIRA 15AMP FUSE

Postby OLDMTNCARVER » Mon Jul 23, 2012 9:26 pm

I try to start my Baghira and the 15amp fuse does what it is supposed to do if there is a short...
What would be a starting point, locations that might be the first to look at?
I'd say more at this point but my better judgement says don't... identifying obvious frustration.
Any help would be appreciated,
Robert

sent wiring drawing in a PM
first thing after fuse is voltage reg
next is the switch
check the switch is it falling apart some have came loose on some bikes at the anti removal screws
where the switch is mounted
i plan on printing the files i sent an take a look
been a while since i i looked at the drawing on the 660 bikes
dave
i have a 97 660 Traveller to look at the wiring on

David,

Thank you for the files.
The schematic that I have for the Baghira is really small and has been difficult to use.
Currently learning dc electrics and such, reading Tracy Martins book... rather be riding.
No the switch assembly seems to be solid. The Baghira is stored inside (in the kitchen) and is really low miles.

does a new fuse blow straight away with no ignition or, when ignition switched on or when starter pressed??.
i assume you have tried a new fuse, as an old fuse will give up the ghost for no reason over time.

With a new fuse in place I turn the ignition to the on position and the kill switch is placed in the run position, everythings alright at that point.
The fuse blows at the moment I press the start button.
Plenty of new spare fuses and I've replaced the battery as well.
Learning process for me. I printed an excel file with the German wire color abreviations and have been going over the schematic downloaded some years ago from this forum.
The starter was removed and tested with the starter spinning so it's been put back in place.

lift the seat and pull the two pin plug from solenoid, may stop it blowing and if so check wire back to switch, maybe something as simple as a wire shorting to earth when live from switch.there is a diode linking starter wires but think i would go with the poss short in loom, good luck with it.

the white plug at the starter relay ...small wires
unplug it and test with a voltmeter meter the wires going back to the harness
there should be power on one(purple) of these wires when you press the button
the other (brown)is the same as minus (earth)on the battery
i think the diode has gone bad and is shorting out

any one know where diode is located there usually in the harness some where
dave

NOTE on my Traveller there brown and purple the purple should go to +12volts when you push start button
if it blows fuse with out relay plugged in switch on handle bar is shorting out or diode is bad
(thats where i would look)

Check the switchgear shorting out on the handlebar....in my case the flash to pass switch was shorting out on the bars.
I removed it and all is well Or use tape to insulate.

Thank you....

Exact same symptoms on my Traveller. Everything worked til I hit the starter button...

All I can show is a Traveller...
Broken diode:

It was covered by the tape wrap, just off the ignition connectors.

Radio Shack 3-amp diode.(Thanks to Dave for that info...old post)
Replaced that and all is well.

Good luck,

David,
Searching "Diode" I found a thread "Diode Failure" back in 2006 that mentions the location of diode(s) found by yellow tape marking their location along the frames main tube (Mastiff / Baghira).

Bill,
Thank you for the information I just got back from Radio Shack...

The schematics that I have for a Mastiff show three (3) diodes. I'd expect the third is in the same location at the steering head that Bill shows in his pictures.

I'm still at it... and learning... Thank you all for your help,
Robert

Where is the 3rd diode ? since you have the yellow tape......
I have never seen yellow tape on the Skorp....

When I mention three diodes, I'm looking at a schematic specific to the Mastiff. The diodes are numbered 30, 31 and 32.
I'm just betting that the Baghira is the same.
I used reading glasses and a magnifying glass as the schematic is all on one page and small type but the parts list for the Mastiff schematic is where I verify the numbers and that there are no more to be found.
David was kind enough to email me a schematic for the Skorpion Tour / Sport. When I look over it I only see two diodes and reviewing the part list for that schematic it shows only two diodes numbered 31 and 32, verifying that I haven't missed any there also.
As far as the yellow tape, ok...? Now I'm wondering what the white tape is for...
I'd rather not tear into the harness more than I have to. Like I said I'm learning.
Regards,
Robert

No colored tape on my Traveller. I was lucky enough to notice that when I turned the bars, I got intermittent contact.
Started unwinding the harness from the front, until I found the diode (again, lucky it was right on the ignition connector...didn't have to go far).

Hi guys,
Along the same track of `diode` failier, I had the same problem, 15A. fuse blow (spent 3 1/2 hours on M4 waiting for rescue), this was diode 31 on the lighting circuit, junction of `GREY` wires, this one was hiding under the tank just above the cylinder.
Nightmare to track down but got there in the end, replaced it with a longer wire to move it towards the carb so away from the heat on top of the engine.
All is good..................... so far :D
