Skorpion thermostat?

Postby mconlonx » Mon Sep 16, 2013 6:36 pm

Just bought a 01 Skorpion Tour. Got a great deal, but it's got a few issues. One is a problem with coolant loss.

Image

Coolant being forced through the clamp to the left of that plastic unit in line with the rad hose. I've tightened it down more and have yet to test it out, but my friend who picked the bike up to me says the plastic unit was leaking, too. That is the thermostat? Any source for a replacement part?

Other stuff which might be pertinent: fans don't come on, tracked it down to the fuse... which is supposed to be a 3v, but which has been replaced with a 10v that was blown. I can only think this is bad. Related to the thermostat issue?

Complication: the gauges and idiot lights have been replaced with an aftermarket LCD job. Apparently the stock gauges were destroyed in an accident. I haven't got into the headlight yet, but there's only two wires connecting up with the speedo unit. Is there some connection relating to the missing gauges which might be affecting the fan situation?

Through links around here, I found the wiring diagram, which led me to the fuse, but I got a bit lost tracing wires on the other side...

On my 96 Traveller both fans died a couple of years ago (think it was the bearings). I threw them away, but put just one back. The dealer here in Sweden said there was really no need for two fans.

Thanks for the info on the fans!

Any ideas on a USA source for replacement thermostat? Anyone got a good used extra kicking around...?

Do you want a thermostat it controls water flow
or a temperature sensor to control the fan

cheap fans scrap an old computer power supply just be sure to read label on fan 12 VOLT DC
and look for the air flow direction arrow on the fan case

Seeking a thermostat, not the temp switch for the fans. I need that black plastic unit in the pic above, inline with the rad hose from the top of the engine to the top of the rad. Behr-Thomson unit. Not the switch unit which screws into the radiator itself

Looks like the fan issue is completely separate and could just be a fuse.

I have had the plastic thermostat housing fail on both my Skorps and have replaced them with a short piece of stainless steel tube.
Have had no problems with warm up or any such other issues. Fans have always been good, give them a squirt with WD40 at every service.
Thermoswitch is standard automotive unit remove and take to auto shop and they should be able to match it, just don't say it's from a motorcycle.

What does the stock thermostat even do, anwyay?!?

I see other thermostats (SZR, Banshee) allow for a warmup circuit, bypassing the rad, but I'm not even sure what this one is supposed to do...?

I don't think it does much but restrict flow a little to allow for faster warm up. Like I said, have removed mine and had no problems. The housing split along the casting line on the body of both my Skorps within 6 months of each other, cooling system empties itself in about 2 seconds in a cloud of steam and green liquid.
