Exhaust Pipe to Silencer Joint Blowing

Postby HENRY » Wed Aug 28, 2013 4:00 pm

Hi, would anyone have a suggestion: I am getting ready my ETZ125 for an MOT. There is a small visible leakage coming from the join underneath where the bracket holds the two together. For last year's MOT preparation I used some Firegum and it worked for a very short period until (I assume) it must have cracked from the constant vibration. A colleague has suggested some sort of asbestos padding or rope from a fireplace shop, to stuff in between the gap. I'm not sure about this, I would like to know If there is a more common (and permanent) solution for this type of problem.

Thanks in advance, Paul

Someone on here will be able to tell you what the correct factory setup is for this joint as I am not familiar with your particular bike but what I have used over many years on cars and bikes for joints other than the exhaust manifold flange in place of Firegum and the likes is clear silicone bath sealant. In recent years I have started using high temperature silicone designed for chimney flues although this is more expensive but does work well on exhaust flanges as the heat range is higher than bath sealant.

The first thing is to check that you have everything properly lined up before you tightened it all up. After that
1. If you ride it long enough leaks like that seal themselves with carbon
2. I use clear hightemp silicone which doesn't set like fire pastes, is cheap and works.
I get mine from my local motorworld store.

Good luck with it
All the best
