Dead MZ 300

Hi, if its the little wire going to a nylon screw in hex near where the chain runs it should not effect the running of the bike - its the neutral light switch.

But glad you are going. If you have been sorting the points and timing, that's the most obvious reason why its running now.

Yes running fine now, there was a wire off on the other side, just assumed the broken one was the issue.
Ok stupid question time, engine oil.......where too and what please ?

Well hush my mouth, it should of been called a FORD (fix or repair daily !!)
thought i'd treat the old girl to some paint removal of all the nasty black paint the previous owner sprayed everywhere, tyres included and now donning some shiney'er covers some chrome shining through the matt black exhaust and some new primer for a slightly better paint job and hit the roads for a gentle spin.
thought id go steady and tootle off round town some 5 miles or so, made about 4 of them and low and behold, cough splutter and dead again

Into the back of the van It went and back home (2nd trip in the van now).....fired up after a few kicks, now it seems it likes tickover doesn't like any throttle when it decides to stop and die again

Could be a bargain in the For Sale section soon

Strip carb and fuel tap, check for rust that's made it's way down from the tank. Not uncommon in a recommissioned bike.

If that's OK, scowl sceptically at the ignition red box. I may have mentioned this before - they're unreliable when old. One last thing - does the coil get too hot to hold a finger to when it conks out? They get unreliable at a certain age and overheat.

Agree with all the points arry makes,especially that those red box ignitions are not good. Best think to do is swap it over to good old fashioned points. Don;t give up on it, bikes that have been neglected for a while tend to have a lot of niggly problems but once they are sorted the bike will be well worth the work

from what i am seeing working on an old MZ is better than
working on an other old bike
with the MZ you can find the parts
with a jap bike same year model the parts are unobtanium
when it come to old 2 strokers here in the usa

there are parts for old bmw's but you have to wave fistfulls of cash

I agree.
Its a slow revving two stroke single that will run fine with a set of points.
A good carb cleanout will work wonders as well i`m sure.
Persist with it.

I will have another look at the weekend and keep you posted, I don't really get time in the week.
I have another fuel tap that came with the bike and don't really enjoy messing with carbs, but I can have a look I guess.
