Dead MZ 300

Postby Deedum9 » Mon Aug 12, 2013 3:23 am

Hi all
Newbie here and just purchased what was a running 1996 MZ300.
Collected it, checked all oils, tyres etc, sorted insurance and set off for a spin on the trusty old 2stroke.

Managed about a mile or so changed up into 3rd and then hesitation, smoke, lack of revs and wouldn't pull.
I pulled over it was idling badly barely ticking over lots of smoke and then stopped. I couldn't start it again, seems to have compression though.
Now sat in the shed, fuel seems ok and running freely, any thoughts or ideas please

Thanks in anticipation
Steve

Choke bung not sealing properly. The over rich mixture kills the plug.

I bought a 1994 301 with the same problem. £5 spent on a new bung and a plug and it took me touring in France.

So part 16 ( a rubber washer) has a habit of dropping off part 15 ( brass......thing!) and blocking the starter circuit in the carb. So the engine is runs very rich

She lives !!! :-D
Had some time tonight and tried to find the points and check them out.
Removed the cover and there's a group of wires running to the front and one thinner wire from the same loom running to the back, connects into a tiny screw ?
The wire was burnt out/snapped, anyway fixed the wire and started her up , all good.
So question is, what was this wire please ?

That's the wire to neutral switch.

I suspect your red box has started working again. This happy state of affairs is only temporary, unfortunately. It will break down again.

Yes that's the neutral switch. Unlike modern complicated bikes, all it does is make the neutral light work. Now send us a picture of the generator ignition set up!
