ETZ301

Postby sharonruddock56 » Mon Jun 03, 2013 12:57 pm

Hi,
I recently bought a1989 ETZ 301 which was easily started but needed 3000 rpm before it would pull away from a standing start. I investigated the carb and found the main jet in the bottom of the bowl. I installed the main jet, thinking I had found the problem, but now it won't start, although it kicks me back and nearly breaks my ancle. When it was running badly it still went like a bat out of hell above 4000 rpm. The new plug is wet, the carb has been adjusted -surely that leaves only the timing? It has electronic ignition which has VEB written on the alternator and a Piranha black box, but the Haynes manual has no instructions on how to set the timing! Am I right about kicking back? Can anyone tell me , in words of three syllables, please, how to check and set the timing?

You may have a blocked pilot circuit. If all you've changed is the carb and now it won't start, that's the place to start looking. By putting the main jet back in, you're restricting the amount of fuel reaching the engine.

Maybe the pilot circuit's always been blocked, but enough was getting through with the jet missing to compensate enough for it to start. Now the main jet circuit's working properly, there's not enough getting through to start it.

Tried bump starting it? If you've got any long hills near you, give it a go! :-D

But yes, if the carburettor is what you fiddled with, then that is probably the object giving you grief.
