ETZ251 Exhaust coming loose

Postby thomaskwscott » Mon May 27, 2013 6:34 am

Hi Guys,

The nut that holds the exhaust to the barrel keeps coming loose. Over a period of a week it come almost down to finger tight. I am using a screwdriver and hammer to tighten it rather than the official tool so maybe i am just not getting it tight enough. Any tips?

Thanks

Tom

A proper C spanner does make tightening it easier, tighten it as tight as you can by hand, then give the end of the spanner a belt with a hammer. Some people coat the thread in silicone sealant so that it makes a carbon seal , Ive never tried it myself. Had the exhaust drop of a YB100 once, got some odd looks riding it to a bike shop to get a new gasket!

Go for a ride. Come back when the engine/exhaust is warmed up. Then tighten it when it is all still hot. Be careful though!

I use a big pair of water pump pliers for this, with plenty of copper grease on the flange and the threads. I do get a very slight dribble of oil from it, but I've never had a two stroke that didn't do that! There's no gas leakage and I've never had a problem with it undoing itself (not like my old Voskhod - I got quite adept at doing the exhaust nuts back up by hand on that as I went along!).
