125 d reg MZ - this battery ok...

Hi,
I need to buy a battery for my barn find 125 ts d reg MZ... I have looked around and apparently the 6N 11A - 1B seems to be the one..... is it the right one... please confirm or advise an alternative....its available from FEKED for 17.95 which I thought was a reasonable price....

Then try a new plug
Check there is power to the coil
Check the points are clean, and properly adjusted
Then come back!

Hi, thanks for the response.... no battery yet as bought the bike as a non-runner and trying to see if I can get her to run before spending on her - have the switch on the head-light to the extreme right position which the Haynes manual for the bike says you can start her with - I do have experience with old Yamaha and Suzuki 2 strokes that you could start and run perfectly without any battery. I am still also able to do this on the Yamaha DT 125 I still have. I have fitted a new NGK 8 plug as advised and the points are fine but there is still no power to the coil - took out the new plug and earthed to check - even added an extra earth as I have had that problem on another bike - still no spark....
Does this help you at all....
Any more suggestions greatly appreciated,

You need a battery to get a spark. It's a very different system to that on old Yamahas etc.

The "emergency start" position, fully over to the right NEVER works, never ever ever! I've owned and worked on over thirty 2 stroke MZs and I've never seen one work. It relies on residual magnetism in the rotor, and after a few years from new, there isn't any left.

You could string a few AA nicad batteries together for long enough to see if you can get a spark if you want to see if you've got life in the bike.

Thanks so much.....Haynes manual hopeless is this regard..... I shall buy a battery immediately.... easy once you know .... so helpful, much appreciated... believe the bike is worth saving - 11000 miles on the clock, but stood for at least the last 4 years....all original and only surface rust - looks all there and very solid but really want to hear it run before I spend time on it - may restore to original..... any market for this model when finished.... that is, are they worth the time and effort and expense.... you obviously have the experience.....

worth it if you want a nice daily driver to ride for years
these you can get parts for ....a D reg any thing else will be hard to get parts for

by the way what year is a D REG in the uk here they do not worry about the year just do you have a plate on it

D reg in this case would be 86/87

I have actually managed to start an MZ using the emergency start position. But only on a bump start down hill!
