Es250 handling woes - any ideas???

Postby stogadog » Mon Apr 22, 2013 2:41 pm

My Trophy has developed a strange wobble that I can't get to the bottom of. Wonder if anyone can think of anything that I haven't.
This is the problem. Just on pulling there is a very slight shake of the head, this goes away (if travelling in a straight line) when I get up to about 20mph. It's when turning right that it really shows though. On tight right handers there is a definite shake of the bars. Not enough to cause terrible trouble but enough to be disconcerting!
It doesn't do it all on left handers.
It was really noticeable at the Thundersprint this weekend, where the bike was being ridden much harder than usual. Today I've re-aligned the wheels (again - they were very slightly out) . I've tightened the head bearings, swapped the shockers over to see if it then affects left handers and even put a different front wheel that I know has good bearings and a new tyre in to see if that would be any different. None of these things made any difference at all. I'm scratching my head now and have run out of ideas. I have just put a new rear tyre on but that seems to be running true and is the exact same model as my previous tyre.
Any ideas welcome!!!

Hi

If this is the one with a swinging arm on the front,i would suspect SA bushes or an indented headset race.

Yes it is the swinging arm model. I have just ordered some new bushes from Germany so will get those in as soon as they arrive. I'm determined to get the little fella riding nicely again. I wondering if the new rear tyre could be affecting it - though I would think that it would be more obvious at the rear end than the front.

Had another play with it today - it's the new rear tyre. I took the wheel out and replaced with the one from my other MZ (that doesn't wobble!) and it was like riding a different bike. Back to normal. When I had got the wheel out I had a good look at the new tyre and it doesn't seem to be sitting properly on the rim. There is a tiny bit of misalignment I reckon. I'm going to take it back to the tyre fitters tomorrow and get them to re-fit it and balance the wheel. Hopefully then the mighty MZ will be back to normal!

The tale is over. The new tyre was no good. I had it refitted and it would not balance properly so I have got a different one and put that on the bike today and hey - presto the bike will turn right again! Now I just need to try and get my money back from the original tyre sellers...
