Ethanol and crankcase seals

Postby bullgoose » Wed Mar 13, 2013 10:57 am

What sort of effect is ethanol going to have on composite components like the crankcase seals in 2 strokes over time? and has anyone tried using Ethanol free petrol like BP Ultimate. I know that lead free petrol when it first came out had a very unstable flame path when burning under compression and led to many a holed piston in 4 strokes (Including my T140 Triumph) due to Detonation. Does anyone know what BP ultimate uses to raise it`s octane ratio.
I believe the Ethanol ratio in petrol today is about 5%, shortly to be raised to 10% and therefore having an even greater effect on Rubber, Gaskets, plastic floats, needles, pipes ect, ect.
cheers

hi there,
in truth the `jury is still out `on this one, the ethernol enriched fuel has`nt been about long enough to know, but, using one of the `super green` pemium grade fuels will do no harm, this may be not a fair comparison, but I know that my `Mastiff` runs better and gives better MPG when I use the premium grade fuels, so the few pence extra cost per Litre is canceled out.

cheers Eric.

here in the usa it 10% at most pumps
in my area we have a lot of farms
and boaters on 2 rivers
couple stations have 90 octane ethanol free
my rt125 runs good on it .
but the fuel with ethanol is a pain.. the bike just does not like it.
cost is about 15 cents more per usa gallon
but the fight to get the bike to start and run correct goes away
no removing and dumping and cleaning out the tank every 2 or 3 weeks
