Powerdynamo

Postby dwc » Sun Dec 02, 2012 11:39 am

Hi all,

Just bitten the bullet and purchased the above for my ETZ 250, about time it was on the road, but I've been prefaricating.

My question is, are they easy to fit?

The bike has a Burwins system fitted at present from the 80's.

Anybody out there able to assist?

I got mine sorted for my Trophy dead easy. Just follow the instructions that they send with it and it'll work. they are in a little bit of pigeon english here and there but when you are actually looking at the bike it should be straightforward enough. My bike fired up first kick after I had fitted it and it has made a difference in how it runs too. It took a bit of fiddling around to make all the electrics fit in the space under my side panel as I had fitted a larger (12V) battery but you shouldn't have that problem as yours is already 12v.

Genuine question - is it worth it on a 12v bike? Has anyone tried it and found it better than the original 170W alternator?

I've got one on my Christmas list for the 6v TS tiddler, but are there any real benefits on a 12 volter, other than not having to deal with points?

Actually - there's a question - the 6 volt small TS powerdynamo is only 100 watts. Has anyone fitted the TS250 (150 watt) powerdynamo to a small TS?

12volt system is usually best
had a bmw r 27 it was 6 volts.
i would still have it ..
but the 6 volt coil and gen system was always a problem
back in the days before you could get a 12 volt conversion

Good afternoon fellow MZers,

I know have the new power dynamo system ready to fit. I've assidiously read and re-read the instructions and have a grasp of what is required, the only question I have is, do I junk all the old wiring and stuff? Or is it still required?

If anyone has a few pictures of the system in place that would be great.

Hi,

I bought a Power Dynamo replacement system for my Bultaco Matador. It was very straight forward to fit and the instructions are pretty straight forward. The kit transformed the bike from a 6v system to a 12v system. I did replace all the wiring and controls because the original equipment was shot. The bike starts easily and runs a treat. I would upgrade any bike own from points to electronic ignition. I also bought a Sachse system for a Yamaha xs400 as well. This was even easier to install and made a huge difference to the running of the bike.

From memory the wires that need replacing are -
the four or five wires that go to the generator - there are two green ones in there somewhere. You might have a new blue one in the powerdynamo wires that will replace your neutral wire switch. I didn't need it on the trophy as my neutral switch comes from elsewhere but I think yours will be in that set of wires.
wiring from the coil which is all new and with your replacement coil anyhow
and the same from your new rec/reg unit that should be in your kit
Basically you will only need to change wiring from your new generator , coil and reg/rec.

Good afternoon,

It's been a while since my last post and the bragging about buying a Power-dynamo, well I've been a little busy with stuff you know how life is!

Well today I actually had time set aside to start fitting it, all has gone well so far but I have one or two queries which I hope the good folk on the forum will be able to help with?

I have the system in place and virtually ready to go, but I need to sort the following:

Regulator

I have the these wires still in place,
RED/YELLOW from the old regulator to the old rectifier.
RED from regulator to battery
RED/GREEN which has two parts, part of it is still connected to the old rectifier.
GREEN from regulator to the fuse box.

I think i can remove the RED/YELLOW it only connect the old regulator and rectifier.
Remove the RED because there is a new one on the new system.
The RED/GREEN I've no idea. If I take off the end connected to the rectifier what do I connect it to, if anything or should I just insulate it?
What does the GREEN lead do? And will it matter if I remove it?

Relay

BLACK what does it do and where do I connect it to?

GENERATOR HARNESS

Fitted ok but I have a blue wire left, where does this go?

FUSE BOX

I currently have the following fuses fitted

7.5
5
20
30
They are blade type and may be a retro fit when the previous electronic system was fitted. Should I go back to stock as shown in the manual?

Apologies for such a long winded post, but I want to get this right and not to blow the thing on the first kick.

I await with anticipation.

If I get chance I'll have a look at mine over the weekend and see what went where , although my bike is a Trophy so it may be a little different - I don't have four fuses in mine for a start, only two. Fairly sure your blue wire is to your neutral switch. The wiring diagram I got with mine was quite good - have you got one. Just remember to use the correct one (the relay one) and you can't go wrong if you take your time and check it several times!
I'll post again when I have had chance to get in the shed , probably Sunday night.

Right then - I've been out to the bike and this is what I have found!
First off - I presume that you have a new reg/rec that came with the kit?
If so you can junk all of your old wiring, from the dynamo, coil and reg
From the new dynamo/ignition unit I have 5 wires -
two black - these go to the reg/rec unit
brown - this is the earth to the coil
yellow and red - these both go to the coil

The black wire from the relay goes into the old loom - on mine it joins into a black and white wire, which heads off to the ignition switch.

There is a green and red wire from the new reg/rec - this goes into the old loom and connects with a blue wire

The red wire from the reg/rec goes to the fuse box. It doesn't matter what kind of fuse you have - I have blades in mine but as I said you have more fuses than I do but this red wire goes to my "main" fuse.

The only other wire that may be confusing is a blue one from the relay which goes into a blue and white one on the coil.

Hope this helps - but please check your wiring diagram first as your loom may be a little different to mine as the bikes are different.
