301 kick start and gearbox problems

Postby stuart-glos » Sun Jan 27, 2013 11:33 am

I started my new MZ301 project yesterday and today came to a crashing halt!

I have 2 301 engines:-

One runs well but won't engage 3rd gear. 1st, neutral and 2nd gears all ok but I can't change into 3rd (or any other higher gear). The gear change lever moves a bit but then becomes solid. The guy I bought it from said someone had been heavy-handed with the gearbox and probably bent a selector fork.

The other engine I've never heard running but it turns over freely and all the gears and clutch work ok. However, the kick start won't return so I assume the return spring has broken.

The problem is I am not an experienced mechanic and lack the knowledge and experience to delve into the crankcases. I'm ok doing most stuff on a bike (wheel bearings, re-jetting carbs, electrics, etc) but have never been inside an engine (other than a 2-stroke rebore).

So I guess the question is, just how difficult is it to fix a gearbox or a return spring?

My only alternative is to sell the engines, I guess.

thanks

Do not despair, you have all the bits you need working, but not in the same engine
Remove the clutch cover complete with working kickstart from the engine with the buggered gearbox ( common problem) and fit it on the one with the buggered kickstart. No need to split the crank cases. Then hope the rest of the engine is OK! Its a couple of hours work at most
ES250 Doppelport, ES250, ES250/1, ES250/2,ETS 250, ES150, ETS150, BK350, IWL Pitty, SR56 Wiesel, SR59 Berlin, Troll............ and thats just the German two strokes!

when taking some thing apart use a group of numbered boxes then its not so hard going back in reverse order
but watch the length of bolts in covers some have many different lengths

if you think a motor is complex
try the front panel on an Icom or Kenwood ham radio transceiver
on them i use the boxes fresh EGGS come in
