a good spokes person wanted

Postby den » Fri Jan 25, 2013 4:35 pm

a good spokes person wanted because my baggy 660 rear wheel has just one spoke broken and it seems impossible to replace it without removing another spoke out of the way,,then how would i fit that! spoke ,, confusing ,, so heres the question

"How do you replace just one spoke on a baggy rear wheel"

edit edit edit ..

im just found another spoke that looks like it was bent way out of shape to fit in the wheel hole and a lame attempt to straighten it ,,so it must be tricky.

my new signature is ,
sorry cat if this thread has allready been covered " so bite me " (lol)

The only ones I've done that were awkward like that were on an old moby, as I recall you had to take a group of 4 out and replace them all at the same time if that makes sense. How about a pic?

There was a guy on here called angus, (call me angus??) from stoke on trent who had all his spokes replaced in stainless steel for £100 per wheel.

Could always try messaging him, anyway gives you an idea on price.

I hate having to ask someone to fix it for me , And the cost , I would love to see someone in a video or even read about the techniques for replacing just one odd spoke ,Even if its really difficult ill still give it a go , if all else fails then ill send it off and pay the price,
So does anyone know of any tutorials for replacing odd spokes ,, not the whole wheel set,,

Oh I dunno Dave just been watching a video of how to do it... looked like the hardest bit was getting the broken spoke out!

There's a few videos of wheel building on youtube, have a look at them to get an idea of what is involved. One thing I would recommend is getting a good quality spoke key and soaking the nipples with WD40 /GT85 or whatever is your penetrating oil of choice daily for a week before you start playing. The problem replacing an odd spoke is getting the new spoke in without bending the bugger permanently

trust me the BMW wheel is a special animal

best sent to bmw and pay the money

what ever adjustment you try is always the wrong spoke and the wrong direction

so heres an update on the spokes thing
I had the tyre removed from the wheel at my local kawasaki leicester shop.(£5)
looking at the broken spoke i realise that another spoke has to be undone to allow the broken one to be fitted. So im attempting this only to realise the spokes have to be bent a little to allow them to clear the rim,i have a go at bending the broken one to see how springy they are and to my surprise they are very soft and not springy a tall.
now then?? im not going to just bend the spokes all gun ho - - i need a tool,,It turned out i have one that done the job perfectly,,it bent the spoke in just the right amount and the reset the spoke to the proper shape as well..WHAT WAS IT? YOU SHOUT!!
so the job turned out to be very straight forward , just a cautionary note..remove any burrs from the inside of the wheel rim ( spoke screws ) before you put the inner tube back in.

i guessed the tension of all the spokes by tapping them with the broken spoke and listening to the tone generated,if you do want to check all spokes then start at the air fill hole and check every fourth spoke untill you have checked them all , quarter turn only, but this is only if all your spokes are loose
happy days,,
new tail tidy next
