electrical signal issues

Postby basser23 » Thu Jan 10, 2013 8:15 pm

Ok all you geniuses out there on electrics....help is needed..
96 Skorpion left turn signals popping fuse(3a) . This happens only when the turn switch is placed in left position.Right works ok until left is engaged, then the fuse blows.
So,I thought it was the flasher, nope, thought I had a ground lifted,nope...here is what I have done so far..checked the wires going to the left bulbs,ok
front and rear, bulbs ok,it will pop the fuse even when bulbs not in circuit...checked the resistance on the right side...same as left,,again right side works fine.
This is a real simple circuit, but where the f... is it messing up?
I think it maybe in the switch, reason being, if I test continuity to right side(from center wiper of switch)engaged, all is good.switch off, open circuit,
Left side...continuity when engaged, open when off,BUT if I read between the pins for left and right, I get a low ohm read.
Also each side(with bulbs removed) reads about 13 ohms between the hot side and grnd side...because the fuse blows immediately I think there is a direct ground path on the left side of the switch......any knowledge helpful
thanks

sounds like a dead short on the one side, you could unplug the wires from loom to bulb holders that would then rule them out if still blowing.
i would then unplug the switch from loom and put a meter on left circuit loom wires with no bulbs fitted and in theory there should be no reading, unless the supply wire is going to earth/ground.
are there left and right warning lights in the dash or just the one common to both circuits :?:

thanks roge,
I have unplugged the turn stalks at both ends and still blows...next is switch..funny,if ya kno how the switch works it shifts right/open(push)shift left,/open (push)
theorectical you should have feed wire to right side /rt and feed to left /lft and should be open between the 2..I get 15ohms in the off position weird
gotta get an analog meter

If it's the same as my 96 Skorpion Sport, have a look in the instrument binnacle where the warning light cables run. Unscrew speedo cable, take the three allen bolts out and ease the front up to see them. Amongst various other wiring issues on mine, a couple of warning light feeds had rubbed through against the metal base plate causing intermittent shorting. It's tight in there and very easy to trap cables when refitting it. Hope that helps and good luck :)

well with any luck,i may have cured it....left rear signal stalk had broken some 2 years ago,and i fixed it..yup i wired 2 extention leads to reach the plug connectors easier.
When I soldered the wires,i wrapped in electrical tape....well guess what? Duh..(I live in Floriduh)The wrap came off through time vibration, and who knows what....
I have resecured with proper shrink tube...hope thats it...it explains the direct short on the left side,
Now the connector from the left handlebar switch...on the loom side, pin 9 is the pin that carries power from the flasher (pin 49a) and is center tap for turn switch. This pin is intermittent
do to loose fit female side...hmm,pin shud be bigger in diameter,I'll tighten the loom side with a dental pick...that should solve it,,,I think...

as side note on soldering...funny i used to assemble and test satellite receivers...i shud know better
thanks for the responses though

nothing like a little electrical problem to make you have a bad day.....
try the one caused by some clutz who thinks he knows what he is doing ...
