es250/2

Postby jar1812 » Sat Jan 05, 2013 4:23 pm

Hallo MZers,

i am interested in owning an es250/2 and the following machine seems to fit the bill.
I was wondering if you can advise me of particular problems to look out for on these models.
Ultimately it will be restored but of course it helps if all the correct parts are there and usable to start with.
I noticed the following discrepancies based simply on web images
missing mz badges on the headlight cowl, missing pillion grab rail, tank cap does not look correct, missing carb cover
perhaps is the steering damper knob missing (or hidden under the fairing ?) missing sidepanel knob.
Incidently it has according to the seller 12v electzrics and contactless (electronic ) ignition and new wiring loom

would be pleased to hear your views. Thanks in advance

Hi, good to see someone who appreciates the odd charms of the ES250/2! The bike looks OK and parts are easy to get hold of. The 12V system will probably be a Powerdynamo which costs around £250 euro and is meant to be a great improvement. The solo bike didn't have a steering damper ( it was fitted for sidecar use). Parts are easy enough to get hold of on ebay.de, though the carb cover may take some time, there are a couple at the moment. Other sources are

Things to check on the bike are side to side play in both the back and front swinging arms, steering head bearings, basically the same as most bikes. The bike will cruise all day at 50-55mph. The gearbox is an acquired taste with a very slow action but you will get used to it!

Hello Neil,
I was just reading the weirdbike stuff earlier today, good to see that you were able to ensure that your mates bike stuff got resuitably re-homed.
Good link there to the spare parts.de. All i need now is an es250/2.
Regards

I presume that you are in Germany? I have an ES250 and love it. In fact it's my favourite ever bike and I have had a LOT of bikes! As realache says once you get used to them they are great fun. I would heartily recommend getting one. What does surprise me is that they seem to be a quite a lot more expensive in Germany than they are here in the UK. I occasionally look on ebay.de and I'm always shocked how much MZ's go for in their home country!
Mine is 40 next year and for it's birthday it's having a holiday to Zschopau! Can't wait!

i imagine that they are cheaper in UK because they are probably still largely viewed as joke old man bikes (i know i used to think that myself)
now that i am an older man i can appreciate their inner beauty !actually i came across another which is a 19ps model unlike the first one i linked which is the 17ps model (non trophy - is that correct designation) same price and open to negotiation, seems to be in more original condition but is much further away from me.
This is not a trophy sport as the transfers might indicate or is that correct for a 71 ? Can anybody point me in the direction of more detailed breakdown of the various model/year differences within the es250/2 range ?
is it possible to tell the 19ps model from the 17ps externally, if not what must be checked - the inlet tract shape ??

This one however does not have the useful 12v conversion/ignition. But has the luggage rack, carb cover, headlight emblems. I doubt i will do much night riding.

I am not sure it is easy to tell the engines apart, I think the difference lies in the porting. The 19ps shares the same barrel as the ETS. But to be honest I don't think there would be much of a noticeable difference between the two engines.

who can tell me what distinguishes a 69 es250/2 from a 69 es250/2 Trophy ?
or perhaps better to forget the year, simply what makes a Trophy a Trophy ?

Thanks

The ES250/2 is a Trophy - there is no difference. The Trophy came in two versions , the standard and the Deluxe which has extra chrome on the shock absorbers etc but they are essentially the same bike. Of course there was the original ES250/1 before the /2 which had more rounded bodywork. I think the Trophy or ES250/2 series began in 1968 and it was named the Trophy after the factories ISDT success.

Thanks, was just a bit confused as some vehicles claim to be an es250/2 and others a es250/2 Trophy.
