MZ Saxon Tour NE 301 - Exhaust baffle problem!

Postby snuffpig » Tue Nov 13, 2012 1:47 pm

As I was coming in to Brighton from a trip up to Haywards Heath this morning she was sounding a bit louder.

On inspection it seems something's happened to my exhaust! Any clues on what the issue is and how to solve it?

The last part of the baffle in the exhaust has broken off. Simplest route is a replacement exhaust as MZ silencers cannot be taken apart, one of the marques few failings.

I've seen this before! You could file out the hole slightly so you can pull the baffle tube out of the back plate slightly and weld it in place. It won't be perfect (it's detached at the other end), but will probably work OK.

On my ETZ 250 the whole baffle inside came lose, its a sleeve inside the chrome outer pipe.

I carefully cut with a hacksaw, around the welded joint under the exhaust hanger bracket, just through the chrome pipe and after a bit of persuasion the outer pipe slid off the baffle, if you can do this you will be able to re weld the broken baffle outlet, then have the two parts of the chrome silencer welded around the joint again, not with gas or stick as it will blue the chrome, I think mine was done by Mig not sure as I don't weld.

Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm going to have a think about the best way to approach this.

Because I cannot weld (and it can be expensive having it done) I'm thinking about picking up a cheap silencer and fitting it myself:

It claims to produce 1 more BHP than the stock MZ pipe but I have my reservations that it's true!

Tell me guys, do you think the broken baffle will lead to other problems (other than slight noise increase) such as a performance decrease?

Looking at your video the baffles are different from my ETZ, but I think as Norman said take it to a welder, and have the tube welded to the end cap, if it costs more than £10 you are being ripped off.

Small, back street, car garages are usually best if you want cheap welding. (Extra cred points if they are under railway arches). They are used to welding the floorpans of rusty old cars, so are experienced at welding thin steel. As Skorpion said, £10 is a fair amount to pay, (two packets of cigarettes was the tradition price!)
