Skorpion airbox removal procedure?

Postby zippy49 » Thu Nov 01, 2012 12:42 pm

Hi All,
Since there is no chassis manual available for the Skorp, does anyone know if it's possible to remove the airbox without removing the rear subframe? Without cutting it apart, that is.
Any advice greatly appreciated,
Tom in SoCal

please remove by taking the frame apart...some one out there needs a air box that is in one piece...
to make his back stock
mine has been glued back together where some one did a butcher job on it..
if you must mod these bikes do not destroy the left over parts some one may need them to restore his
dave

the battery sets on a ledge on the air box
best to make a new battery holder that way you can fit a bigger battery

Hi David,
So the answer is no? Even with the carbs and the carb-to-cylinder head boots removed? Argh.
I have learned long ago, while working on vintage bikes, to find another part to modify rather than destroying the original. I understand that most chassis and bodywork parts are not available. I have better luck with my Velos! Well, they did make a few more than MZ did Skorps.
However, I've already opened up the LH intake for the bigger boot. Would you still want it? And I've made a drawing of a battery holder for my welder buddy, would bolt to the strap just above the airbox. I'm using a Shorai, weighs 1.2 pounds, so it will be easy to support.
It's removing the wiring harness that is stopping me right now. It is getting old and brittle!
Cheers, Tom

It is possible to remove the airbox without dismantling the sub frame. I've done this a few time to remove the carbs in winter when the rubber tubes are too stiff to bend out of the way.

Firstly, remove the saddle, tank and sidepanels. Remove the battery. Undo the screws holding the voltage regulator and ignition box in place, and allow them to dangle by their wires. Remove the breather pipe from the bottom of the airbox. Undo the four screws holding the airbox in place, and wiggle it backwards and out of the frame.

Hope this helps!
