ETZ 250 gear selection problems

Postby spannerphil » Tue Sep 11, 2012 7:29 am

Can anyone offer advice? I recently restored an ETZ 250 but after about 500 miles it has developed a gear change problem with difficulty changing from 2nd to 3rd and with no 5th gear engagement at all!
I have stripped the engine/gearbox and the problem appears to be the selector drum is not rotating quite enough to fully engage the cogs. All appears to be in reasonable order apart from perhaps a small amount of wear or possible distortion of the fingers on the selector bar which turns the selector drum. Has anyone esle had this sort of problem and cured it by fitting a new selector bar? Many thanks

I'm no expert but from everything I've read I think MZ's tend to have a selector plate design fault that's related to 3rd gear.

I'm hoping someone else can give you more details.

Hello snuffpig, Since posting the problem I have stripped the engine/gearbox and diagnosed and fixed the problem. The problem was wear and distortion in the teeth on the end of the arm which is operated by the gearchange lever shaft and which turns the selector drum. Because of the wear and distortion this arm was just not turning the selector drum quite enough to fully change gears on up-shifts. The cure was a spot of percussive mainteneance - I put the arm in a vice and hit the teeth with a very large hammer forcing them inwards a little. Full gears are now restored. I will order a new arm in case it re-occurs - AKF list them at Eur8 each (plus postage!!!) Thanks for your interest.
