1974 neutral detent position i took bolt out help )=

Postby franek25 » Mon Aug 27, 2012 10:21 pm

hello everyone i am new here and just bought my first 1974 mz 250. I have a issue i t had been sitting for some time from owner before me so i drained out the gear oil. I have now learned that i removed the bolt that had a spring on the end of it . at the time i assumed it was just how these bikes were. i have come to find out that i unscrewed the neutral dent bolt. the gears really dont work now . So before i ruin something worse what should i do were can i get part if needed. When i took bolt out i dident see any ball. I dont know were else to turn no one around me knows how to fix it please. hope all is well with you all . thank you so much for your help I hope i explained my issue correctly (=

hi :smt006 ,would have thought the gear selection would still work, just you have no positive neutral position, have you tried refitting the bolt and spring after finding neutral, assuming that this bolt is for the neutral position only,on an xr250 one of the bolts if removed will need a strip down to reset the gear selector
also i would assume they fit into a tube in the casing and as under spring pressure the gear selector mechanism would stop and ball/thing from falling in the gearbox.
pic of the bolt, spring and where it fits may help and location as some one may be round the corner, good luck

The ball probably dissapeared into your waste oil container ( thats were mine ended up!) Unless anyone knows better all you need to do is remove the bolt, replace the spring and ball ( I use a dab of grease to hold the ball in place, then ensuring you have not forgotten the sealing ring ( and a smear of your gasket paste of choice) and carefully screw it back into place. Can't for the life of me remember what size the ball is but it is just the right size to push into the plug (dont forget the spring or you will have fun getting it out again)

Thank you so much for your help (= i did some looking around and i belive its a 10 mil ball not sure exatly though looked all over trying to find someone that sells it or if one would work off a honda or something. Its weird something so little could cause so much trouble. I am going to try and try and buy something of ebay that may work something off a honda 1974 maybe it will work. When i drained gear oil i noticed that the spring was shot and uncoiled and the ball was missing. I bet the person before me lost the ball and why it was never ridden. Well ill try and see if it works if anyone else gets any info were to get part or what i could use in its place would be great thank you again for your help (= want to try and get this mz on the road like it deserves (=

I'm sure Ost2rad will send to the US, so if you get stuck they do this

And take payment by paypal

Good luck on getting it up and running

I wish I could learn German it would make my life so much esaier, but I just don't seem to be able to do languages. When I was 7 they tried teaching us a French, just spoken not written which was OK but when I started having to write ot it just fell apart! Tried German but just couldn't make any headway. Most recently had a go at Russian (to prepare for an overland trip to Mongolia) and it started to make sense but then work got in the way so I'm stuck with the usual 20 or so words!

Was there any special way i was supposed to put detent in. I keep reading , " as long as you dident shift gears with detent out you should be able to just screw bolt spring and ball back in . Well since the spring was shot and the ball was missing the gears were shifted by old owner and me loading bike in truck and putting in gear once in truck and who knows how many times by owner. I was wondering what is the issue with just screwing the bolt back in after bike has been shifted ?? because that is what i did )-= please help ??
