Availability of 2 stroke oil

Postby tonyc » Tue Aug 14, 2012 4:51 pm

I have been told by a member of staff at a Total filling station, that they will no longer be selling 2 stroke oil. Is this true? Theirs was very good. It's a shame if it is true.

It wouldn't suprise me. The sales must be declining as more of the little bikes and scooters that used to be 2-strokes are now 4-strokes. Mind you, I am old enough to remember pre-mix pumps ( last seen in 1990 when touring eastern europe!) and redex pumps so I'm not easily suprised.

Yes, I have seen them in France some time in the early 90's. Can you remember pink paraffin pumps here?

my dad had i think a bsa that you started on gasoline and switched to paraffin
but he just ran it all the time on gasoline
as paraffin was only sold at 1 station in town and it was not cheaper than gas

I emailed TOTAL about this. They replied to say they had received my email and it would be receiving attention. Than was last week. If they do bother to reply then I will post anything interesting they have to say.

Hi tonyc.

I wouldn't worry about the availability of 2T oil, ebay is full of top spec oil at a good price.

This is what I'm going with next, top spec, part ester,

When I ran a couple of DKW cars back in the 70's I purchased the oil in 5 gallon drums which made it a lot cheaper. I think this facility is still available as I saw a drum at my local Marine workshop recently.

I also used to buy 5 gallon drums of oil for my Wartburg in the 1970s, was very cheap then, and all had a similar specification,
this is not the case today, in my last post I said I was going to try

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SYNTHETIC-RAC ... 43ade04eca

But having phoned the company they couldn't say if it was suitable for my Yamaha RD350 YPVS, the spec's claim it to be Ashless.

I have used ashless TC-W3 oil in my ETZ with no problem's, but it's not for use in engines that rev over 7000-7500RPM or have a Powervalve. these engine's need ash as a cleaning agent among others.

Two Stroke Oil Specifications.

Oil for Motorcycles Air Cooled inc Water cooled.
Low Ash. API TC. JASO FB to D. ISO-L-EGB to D. B is oldest specification D latest.

Oil for Water Cooled Boats, ie cooled by water from Lake/Sea.
Ashless. TC-W3.
For Environmental Reasons.

I do my mix with 15w40 most times, 2 or 3%, never had a problem. I am not racing anyways.
I live close to what used to be the 2 wheel capital, we had Casal, Sis-Sachs, Famel-Zundapp, Macal-Minarelli factories in the 60´s. 70´s 80´s and 90´s, we can still find a lot of premix pumps around here working :D but of course fewer since these factories closed.

Engine oil was frequently used in the past as 2stroke oil wasn't available. However if you do use it you may find an increase in carbon build up in the engine and exhaust, along with plug whiskering. This is why 2stroke oil was formulated in the first place.

my 1966 yamaha 305 used regular 30 weight oil and had an auto lube pump
ran it almost 100,000 miles in 6 years with little problem
after i figured out the same spark plug used in a bmw r50 s did the trick
it was a good runner but gas mileage was a problem

I remember pre-mix pumps,

they were still in use eastern Europe in 2009 when we toured east Germany and the Czech republic,

(lots of mz s, Trabants and wartburgs still in use out there)

I think that 2 stroke will still around for some time to come as there are lots of motors including Mazda RX7/8/9 rotary engines that need good 2 stroke oil

Support your local motorcycle shop, and by it in 4 litre cans. Premixers can always carry enough in a small bottle on the bike.

Tesco have Castrol branded 2T oil in 1 litre bottle on special offer at the moment at just £1.48 per litre - 1980's prices or what!

Seems not to be in the main stores though but is in the petrol station shops.
