Running With No Battery

Postby stuart-glos » Fri Apr 27, 2012 6:07 am

I have recently purchased a 301 and intend to convert it into a trail bike type of thing.

I want to make the bike as minimal as possible - that is, take off as much as I possibly can whilst leaving it a road legal machine.

I used to have a Suzuki TS125 that would run without a battery - can I do the same with an MZ301?

thanks

I would suspect not, the MZ alternator uses field coils, which need a battery to produce a magnetic field. The Suzuki had a fixed magnet rotor, as do most jap bikes. If I remember rightly the Suzuki had a magneto, with a seperate ignition and lighting coil, the battery was only there to store surplus charge, and had nothing to do with the ignition. I would suggest as you don't want lights, to fit a small sealed gel battery, as these don't spill when tipped over.

i recommend a red led lamp ran by a battery on rear of bike ..
with a switch for use when emergency stopping at night
on busy main motor ways
if you want no main battery
