Helicoil size.

Postby mirmay » Fri Jun 08, 2012 3:17 pm

I'm sure someone out there knows the answer to this. I need to fit a helicoil type thread insert for the mirrors on my ETZ125. I bought a set off ebay and to cut a long syory short, got the wrong size after researching thread sizes on internet. I bought an M6 set which is too small, do I need an M10 size (the spanner size for the fixing nuts is 10mm).
All advice gratefully received.

The size you need is M10 as this is the tread size, not the spanner size. as a rule a 6mm thread nut needs a 10mm spanner, a 10mm thread nut a 14mm spanner. Be aware however there are two pitch sizes for 10mm threads, 1.25. and 1.5, older MZ's used the coarser pitch. An easier option may be to fit a mirror clamp to the handlebars, if you check out the following link to bay you will find a type which will replace the rear part of your clutch lever boss. I have the same fitted to my etz 251. Just beware that its for the finer pitch, ie jap mirrors.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-10mm-Thread-Mirror-Clamp-Fit-Back-Switch-2-Bolt-Fitment-/280855441160?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item416449ef0

Buy a metric thread guage and measure the mirror stem thread yourself. Thats the only sure way of doing it. You need one with the hole sizes and the thread pitch indicators on it. As usual google it.

Here's the clamp I mentioned in my previous post in this string. Its an easier answer to the problem for most as it involves no thread cutting, its also a lot cheaper than buying a helicoil kit.
