Mastiff fuel tank problems

Postby 660_rider » Mon Feb 20, 2012 12:20 pm

Hi folks, the previous owner of my bike has striped the threads on the captive nuts in the tank for holding the seat and front radiator panels on, then drilled them out and stuck some rubber in the hole and used self tappers to hold it in place, which 1, looks shit and 2, aint really a great idea, so without buying a new tank what are my options on repairing this?

I thought about filling the holes with liquid metal then attempting to drill and tap it to M6, no idea if liqiud metal will be to brittle or not though.

Failing that i was thinking i could try and get the old captive nuts out and trying to put new ones in its place, looks easier said than done though.

cheers

Have a chat to Grahams in Taunton, from the parts diagrams it seems there are 2 types of fittings, on my Baghira they are twist and lock but the diagram also shows fitting for screws and nuts. you might want to repost this in the 660 section.

I pulled the old ones out by tapping a thread in the old one (m8, I think) and pulling them out with a puller made of a bolt and an oversize socket. I then turned some inserts on a lathe with offset holes - my tank has swollen slightly and the seat bolts no longer line up, which I think is common.

You don't have to make fancy inserts though, once you pull the old ones there's plenty of area to fill with epoxy and just stick a cap nut in there.
