MOT service chain adjustment

Postby djsbriscoe » Sun Feb 26, 2012 9:48 am

I took my RT125 for an MOT test about a month ago and it failed on the front disc juddering. I bought a new disc off Grahams (arrived next day-fantastic service) and asked them (the shop doing the MOT) to fit the disc and resubmit for the test. They fitted it but stripped the thread in one of the bolt holes as a result. Of course I had to pay for their incompetence as the bike would not pass the MOT without a new disc. Now I find that they "adjusted" the chain leaving me with 10mm (should be 30 to 40) of chain slack. I did not find this out until last thursday when the chain/rear sprocket was making a bit of noise. I have ridden approx 300 miles with the chain like this not thinking to check it as I thought they had adjusted it properly. At the very least I have to fit a new chain/sprockets and hope to that the final drive bearing has survived the ordeal. Not too worried about the bearings in the rear wheel as they are easy to change if damaged. Final drive bearing damage/failure means a full crankcase split. What are your thoughts? Would any serious damage have been done to the final drive bearing?
I'm never going back to that place again.

i would file a complaint to the guys in charge of running the mot inspection
system
they do not need bum shops doing it
and sounds like they cost you about 200 pounds uk
that stinks

They are a proffesional dealership (take that with a rather large pinch of salt) and should know what they are doing. They owe you for the damage incured, and cost of repair (at a dealer of YOUR choice) if they adjusted the chain that tight and only left 2/5ths of an inch of chain movement, the chain would go to MAX tightness on any bumps and that would Ruin the sprocket and chain, as well as possably wrecking the output shaft bearing too.
With Mz's having enclosed chains it is critical that they are adjusted correctly.

if they refuse, threaten to go to the local and motorcycle press (do that any way as its a good way to let other bikers know of rouge/dodgey dealerships) then if they still refusing to sort the problem, go to trading standards, and they may take them to court in an industrial tribunal. Citizens advice bureaux will be able to help you with that.
