MZ Mastiff

Postby jacquesnaude » Thu Dec 22, 2011 3:24 pm

I need some advise regarding my MZ Mastiff. I bought this two years ago second hand and the bike has served me well.
Last week I stripped the bike to repair some spokes on the rear wheel, but since replacing it I find that as soon as I tighten up the nut on the shaft the wheel binds.
I have taken it off several times and tried again without success, it still binds.
I could have been careless and lost a spacer that fits in the hub, but I am unable to tell as I cant find any info on what it should be like.
Please assit me. I dont think this is the bikes problem but rather some thing that I am doing wrong.
I really would appreciate some advice.

I thought that pictures with the parts listing to the right might be of some help.

Here's a couple more.
If you've misplaced something I hope this would help to identify the part or parts you might need.
If you want you can click on the desired picture to make it larger and easier to read or just print.

Please note that I've changed the pictures to the correct Mastiff photos. I realized that the Baghira assembly pictures I had provided were missing the part number section that pertains to the spacers that you asked about.
I apologize for my mistake.

Thank you kindly for your assistance.
I am still in the dark as it does not appear that anything is missing from the assemble of the rear wheel.
I am sure that I am overlooking something, will keep you posted.

Just a couple of thoughts, is the sprocket carrier seated in the cush drive properly, is the back wheel aligned properly, if its not the rear disc may lock up in the caliper. Do the pistons in the brake caliper need reseating?

I have tried everything I can think of. I have taken the break callipers off but it is still binding.
It appears to be the spacer on the right hand side that is binding on the bearing seal. It was not doing this before.
That is why I thought I may have lost a spacer.

You state that the spacer is binding on the bearing seal, is this part 28 or 29 on the diagrams, as these appear to fit on the outside of the swing arm, not inside. I apologise if I'm asking something stupid, but I've never worked on a Mastiff, I'm working from the layout on the diagrams, and remembering the daft things I've done in the past! I recently had the front wheel on a etz251 bind after changing the tyre, turns out the bolts holding the brake caliper onto the fork are two different lenths and I'd mixed them up, locking the disc!
Edit: I've just spent some time looking at pictures of the rear wheel in the gallery, any chance you've managed to fit one of the washers inside the swing arm between the brake caliper carrier, and the arm itself. I refer you to my previous comment about my own daft actions.

Good Day
Thank you once again for your advice.
I looked at the diagram again and noticed that the spacer I am referring to is not pictured here. Once the swingarm is assembled there are two spacer that fits onto the shaft that alligns the break callipers with the disc. This is opposite to the sprocket. The spacers fits between the hub and the swingarm. This is where I suspect that the wheel is binding as the one spacer is recessed to align with the wheel bearing on the hub, but as soon as you pull the shaft tight the wheel locks up. It just does not run free. I suspect that the spacer on the inside of the hub could be damaged and that it is allowing the bearings to be pulled to close together. But, I am still stuck, I am going to take it all apart again and start over.
Problem is there are no bike shops nearby. Hopefully I can go for a ride on Christmas morning. (Or I will just take the GS)

Problem solved. When you first dont succeed, go back and see what you did wrong.
It was never the wheel assembly or any of the bearings. I took off the chainguard to clean and when I refitted it the bolt that I used was pushing past onto the sprocket and thus preventing the wheel from turning freely. Whel I did say all along that I suspected I was the cause of this problem.
Thank you for all the advice. Maybe I will go for a ride afterall.
Thank you for the site, it is nice to know that some assitance is available should something serious go wrong.

i use a plastic box with compartments or smaller boxes inside
and try to always make sure the bolts go back in the same holes
and pieces back in the order they came apart

i have been working on things like this for almost 60 years
and i also some times get it back together WRONG
if i am not careful
i was in the basement yesterday looking at the SAXON TOUR
some of it is still apart from the wreck in dec 2007
so i am going to have fun with that...
hope i can use the parts book to sort it out
