Electrical Gremlins

MZ folk,

I require your expert assistance. I was hoping today to have the inaugral start up of my project ETZ 250, however some gremlins have taken residence since my last working session.

At present all the electrics work, that is lights, instrument cluster, horn and brakes. All the wires have been tidied up and replaced where required and everything given a liberal coating of WD40.

Alas today I attempted to start the bike but with no result. Fresh fuel, fuel tap on and feeding the carb. However, no matter how much I kicked there was not a a glimmer of life. No trying to fire up nothing.

I rechecked all the wires, seemed to be ok. I checked the coil, which was warm to touch, so power was reaching it. I even cut the ends off the HT lead to expose fresh copper. Nada.

My question is ,should the coil be warm? And is the problem likely to be a combination of knackered coil and HT lead?

remove old plug, use a new plug(not installed)connect ht lead and ground threaded portion...then kick..should have spark,dont think the coil should be warm...ohm out the ht lead if suspect....

Coil warm is ok. Check for spark. Let us know.
And when you get it going, take pics. !

i always check for spark at plug tip
that's on my first couple kicks
if its there then i go looking for the gas can

Having a spark when the plug is out, is not an indication that you get a spark when its in the engine. I belive as the air is compressed as the engine is turned over its electrical resistance increases. Check your spark as you turn the engine over, it should be a blue/white colour, if its only a yellowish, try giving your battery a charge.

Thanks for the replies.
Both the battery and spark plug are new.
I am debating now about changing the HT lead and the coil just to be sure.

The 250 engine "kicks" through the clutch mechanism. If its slipping, it may still seem to be kicking over, but the engine will not rotate. Try adusting the clutch at the engine end.
