strange idea.....(concerns 2 stroke MZs :p)

I had a strange idea.....


what it consists of, is modifying the right hand crank case cover, and then mounting a small car alternator above the gearbox, behind the cylinder.

then instead of the rotor on the crank, mount a pulley for a belt drive to the alternator.

a custom plate for the points/etc ignition would be needed, but that shouldnt be hard.....


it would lighten the crank a bit (making it a little more free revving), the regulator/rectifier would all be sorted as part of the alternator itself, so the wiring loom would be a bit simpler as well....

you can get some very small alternators (20 to 40amp), so additional devices (heated grips, heated seat, etc), could be used, without worrying about draining the battery/overloading the standard alternator.....





just a random idea.....anyone think it would work?

I've seen pics and a write-up for a conversion like that on a Honda Goldwing.
Looked pretty neat. 'Course, it had the fairing to hide all the extra "stuff".

i had a strange idea once , just after a funny fag!! why are dinner plates round and why does the food on them look better than it tastes , My idea was to make a dent in the center of the so you could fit more gravy on the plate , wrote the idea down and averything..following morning i realized i just invented the bowl , lol

Difflock, did you ever pursue the idea of a car type alternator? How funny, I was thinking about this yesterday, joined the site and found your post this morning! Who knows I might give it a go next winter.
