Baghira engine temp

Postby den » Sat Jul 02, 2011 4:12 pm

Hi all ,
Could you all help me and give me your estimate for when the engine on your baggy is suitably warm enough to pull away from cold start ,
Mine for instance is freaking me out , I have not had it long and since i got it and unlike ANY bike i have had in the past it warms up and gets hot within 60 seconds. It rides hot but never hot enough to put the fan on or cause any smoke or loss of performance..The exhaust linkpipe is pretty close and i can feel the heat on my leg as well,Is this normal 8)

next

How does the oil system work , After a long run i noticed black oil ( half teaspoon ) dripped out from my oil breather pipe, upon checking the oil level in the filler cap i noticed the oil is fresh and newish-How could this be , Dirty engine oil but clean oil in the reserve?? -Thought it circulated ,

Thanks in advance for your :smt006 forthcoming answers

do check the timing with a light in case past owners used a different cdi box
or set it wrong
may have air in the cooling system
water cooled engines do not like that

Mine gets hot quickly as well. If you look thru the pictures of Bagihiras you will see that many people put high temp hedder wrap around their exhaust. I'm assuming this is to keep from getting their right leg from getting toasted. I did not notice the heat much when it was 70 degrees outside but now that it is 90-100 I'm gonna have to do something. Just ordered some hedder wrap and stainless zip ties earlier tonight and am sure that will make for a cooler ride.

Doesn't say anything in the owners manual about bleeding the cooling system after changing coolant. I would run it at idle for a while with the cap off to get the bubbles out and see if the coolant is circulating. If you are wondering if it is running too hot ...... Pro Circuit used to make temperature heat strips that are adhesive backed and will stick on juust about anywhere..... radiators etc..If it was me I would just let it idle with a thermometer it it and see what its doing.....just borrow your wifes cooking thermometer when shes not looking.

ok i get the jist with the temp thing , its just a standard ill have to get used too , freaky though , wonder if it will do it in winter , Now then , what about the oil circulation.am i realy likly to see fresh engine oil still at the top of the oil fill cap, yet dirty oil comming from the engine breather pipe??
How does the oil in the frame work , does it top up the engine oil when needed or is it a circulatory thing , :!:

it is a circulatory thing, it gets constantly pumped through the engine

OK , I'm going to have to check the oil filter and pipework , Any things to watch out for , gonna completely change the oil just to see if it drained dirty for a while then runs clear , if it does do you think my oil pump may not be working properly hence the engine heat being excessive and what i can see is cleaner oil at the filler cap???

i am not sure about the oil pump, if it would not work properly i think you would have bigger problems than engine temp, the engine is basically the same as the air cooled xt 600, i have bin riding them since the late 80', never had any problems with the oil pump, have you checked the valve clearance? is the carb stock? i ride mine sometimes for a short distance in shorts, i know, not a good idea, even in florida i don't notice too much heat off the exhaust exept the wind blows from that direction,

its not so much the exhaust getting hot , i take that for granted ,It how quick the engine itself warms up , like it gets to running temp in under 60 seconds.dont think it overheats, just gets hot quick

don't get me wrong, but without any temp gauge how do you know what temp the engine is, do the fans come on pretty quick?
