TS125 Gearbox oil

Postby Rich_MZ » Thu Mar 17, 2011 2:00 pm

Hi , I have searched the forum about gearbox oil and seen to be getting a bit confused.
Could members tell me what oil they use in there MZ TS (ETZ) gearboxes please.
At the moment I am using MTF94 , which is SAE 80ish for landrover boxes, I was going to change it to EP90 but read something somewhere that EP oil can be harmful to older boxes.
The reason for the change is that the clutch drags a bit and neutral to 1st when hot is a bit of a struggle.
Thanks in advance ,
Richard

To be fair I have has a few of the 2Ters but not a 125 on the road (project in the shed). In my experience they all drag a bit; a little hop first thing in the morning - nothing to worry about. As to oil I would only ever use Silkolene light gear oil. To change get the bike hot (long run) drop the oil and leave to drain overnight and then top up fresh in the morning. Hypoid in old boxes is just over spec - I wouldn't worry too much, although I am a rider not an engineer.
All the best

Hi again , thanks for the info so far.
So would it be ok to use normal 10w40 engine oil as long as its got no special additives like 'Magnetec' which I would think would make the clutch slip.
I see in the ETZ 125 owners manual gives the choice of engine oil 40w or SAE80 gear oil, the reason I mention this is the ETZ and TS 125's seem to use a lot of the same engine components.

Thanks

I remember when I bought my ETZ 250, the importer Wilf Green issued a booklet with the bike that stated to use EP gearbox oil,
But I like others over the years found that this was not necessary, and that 75w-80w light gear oil is the one to use as it makes the gear change easier, and can be bought at car accessory shops, most oil companies make this grade.
