Plastic fuel tanks deforming from ethanol?

Postby pwillikers » Wed Mar 02, 2011 6:21 pm

I suspect the ethanol in the fuel in the US is deforming my plastic fuel tank. If I sight down the side, it seems to be swelling and pushing the side body panels apart. Anyone else observing this?

I BIG issue with other brands with plastic tanks like Ducati, I think Buell, others. Nobody has really offered up concrete answer, but everybody assumes it's the ethanol/water in the ethanol blend fuel. Some tanks, like Multistrada are very complex and fitted to bike. Some of the warping has caused fittings on the tank to not seal properly and cause leaking fuel, pretty rare but Ducati has a fuel pump x-ring seal replacement recall out right now cuz of it.

most of the bikes i have owned the tanks were tooo small any way
just gives me an excuse to fab one up out of aluminium sheet
and say oem tank NLA
to the bike inspector

the sheet i use is fairly thick stuff
