Oil Leak on a Saxon Fun

Postby bilbosmeggins » Sun Sep 26, 2010 8:44 am

Hi all

I have a Saxon Fun 251 which is leaking a fair bit of gearbox oil. I have taken the cover off the side to reveal the front sprocket etc, and the oil is leaking from the neutral switch. Is there a good way to seal this switch, ie silicon, or PTFE or similar, or do I need a new switch?

Cheers in advance, Andy

if its leaking from the wire entry hole it needs replaced
if around the threads some sealer might do it
but dont get it to tight as the threads may pull out of the case

Thanks both. To be honest I just assumed it was escaping via the thread but, now you come to mention it, it could be from the wire entry hole. I'll crack open the case again and get busy with the WD40 and ascertain EXACTLY where the problem is.

All the best, Andy

Hello

Loctite 598 make a good seal, only need clean surfaces and wait at least 24 hours.

Cheers for that. My Saxon is being used daily at the moment whilst my Triumph Tiger undergoes open-heart surgery so the 24 hour wait is a no-no. As soon as the Tiger is back in service I shall have a go.

I will wager that it is not the switch that is leaking - a little plumber's tape is all you need there. Beside (next to) the switch there is tin plug part of the casting process. Burwins in the UK sell a turned alloy version which replace it. You then need to use a little araldite to make the seal good. Probably best to lay the bike over and degrease first. Also be sure that it is not weeping from behind the generator ie: that your crank seal isn't leaking.

Well good luck and let us know how you get on. My fix is still a good 'un after over seven years

"there is a tin plug part of the casting process."

is it similar to the one in the engine case of cars some call a soft plug ?

I have no idea Dave. There is hole in the casing and it is filled with a tiny thimble like tin plug and they leak when they get old and tired.

water cooled car engines have them in the block there called soft plugs or freeze plugs
some of them located where there a real pain to change if they go bad
