Developing vibration on Baghira???

Postby Taipan » Thu May 20, 2010 7:43 am

Hi Everyone

Whilst riding home last night I noticed my bike was developing a vibration. It seems to be coming right through the bike and is there if you rev it, so it isn't drive train related. Its not making any extra noises or knocks etc and has used no oil or water. Any ideas on what this could be?

Many thanks.

Ther first thing I would check is the tightness of the engine mountings ....... The last time this happened to me I was able to tweak every single one up at least 1/4 turn.

Thanks. Top mounts I was able to turn a slight bit but the rest were solid. Seems tohave helped though. I think its that an I have a slight misfire toot hat is causing it? Its certainly better today but not quite the same as it was.

Misfires'll sure cause vibes on a big single like ours.  The most common cause of misfires is tracking of the HV plug current to earth - usually caused by old insulation breaking down - or the spark plug being so worn and/or opened up that it's easier for the electricity to jump to earth than it is to jump the huge plug gap.

The easiest way to attempt to isolate tracking is to run the bike in a dark place - I do it in my garage, at night, with the lights off. Start the bike, and look for "fairy lights" - little sparkles that indicate electrical activity. Shine a torch on the sparks and you'll see where the tracking's happening.

Failing that, you can try re-routing the HT (Plug) lead slightly, along with spraying the ignition leads and electrics with WD40 or similar - but any spray-fix will likely be temporary.

Good idea. I'll give it a night time test. I normally take the tanks of bikes and hook up a little lawn mower fuel tank so I can the electrics more clearly. I think this maybe a partially blocked jet though? I was really low on fuel and hoping I'd make the garage when it started. So I'm wondering if I'd sucked some crap through from the tank?

I didn't have allen keys last night so i couldn't get the carbs off. I did drain teh fuel bowl though and it was indeed full of black sediment. The bike seems to be running much better and smoother now. That said i did check the plug cap to make sure I hadn't damaged it or suchlike when fitted a iridium plug last weekend.
