Postby neilinlancashire » Thu Feb 25, 2010 5:29 am

 Hello everyone im Neil and this is the first time ive used this forum, it looks great so here goes,
I have a lovely ETZ 250 but I hate the lurching etc when you shut off the throttle , I am interested to hear of any ideas to reduce this to a minimum as it is very frustrating on what otherwise is a lovely bike.
Also I have a TS250/1 which has been converted to 12 v does anyone have a seat toolbox cover for sale please
SAFE RIDING
Neil.

Hi Neil. I'm not sure how true this is but someone told me that decoking the exhaust will help with the surging characteritics. My ETZ has a new silencer on it and doesn't do it very much so there could be some truth in it. It's always worth doing anyway to free up some of the ETZ's mighty power! I cleaned out the pipe on my other MZ - a trophy and it has made a difference - it sounds a lot healthier and it does seem a bit more torquey now.
Where abouts in Lancs are you?

No I'm not in the club but I think that I should get around to joining soon. I have two the ETZ (which is kind of my wife's bike and the Trophy). Bizarre to find another mz person so close by seeing as this is mainly an American site! Get out to Knott end much? Maybe we could meet up over there at some point and compare fine german motorcycles!

Hi,
When I had my ETZ 250-300, I found that the setting of the ignition and carburation was critical for a smooth engine on a closed throttle,

First with a dwell meter set the points Dwell Angle to 132-136 degrees.

Then adjust the ignition timing to 2.5-3.0 mm BTDC nearer 2.5 the better as when the heel on the contact breaker wears it will advance the timing.

For the carburetter with the three screws holding on the float chamber, (can't remember number maybe, 30n 2.5)
Check that when you blip the throttle the revs come back down immediately, if they come down slowly screw the air screw in, 1/4 turn increments to enrich the mixture while adjusting the slide stop screw to give a tick over of about 1000 RPM this may take some time.
Ignore that the manual says air screw 1.5 turns out, all carbs wear.

Fuel level in the float chamber needs checking, in the works manual it shows using a spare float chamber with a hole in the side and a perspex window glued over, this is the only way to check for correct fuel level.

With patience you should now have no lurching

The problem with the 250 MZs are that they will run with widely varying settings but roughly,
If it kicks back when starting it usually means ignition is too far advanced.

Hope this helps

This might be a daft question but what is a dwell meter and what is the dwell angle anyway?!
Yours in ignorance Mr Stog!

Hi stogadog.

Dwell angle is the time in which the contact breaker points are closed in relation to crankshaft revolution,
this ensures that the condenser can build up enough power to fire the spark plug.

I used a old dwell meter bought from a auto jumble for V8 engine's and set angle at 16.5 degrees,
8 x 16.5 = 132 degrees.

A WORKS manual is a MUST have. (Not Haynes)
