Rotax Rectifier/Controller Module Fuse Protection

Postby comanche91 » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:58 pm

I picked up this mod on the German MZ forum and think it's very worthwhile: http://mz-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=99&t=30677

For the battery charge indicator I am using this: http://www.signaldynamics.com/products/Modules/huvm.asp

Cheap insurance to prevent this. :D

i'd be more worried about the reg frying the cdi unit, reg/rects are easily replaced, cdi units not so :D
but any protection is better than none,

Don,

which wire are you fusing? The black one, right? You have the low
voltage light tapped into the same wire?

What would cause the reg/rec to go out like that? One could
use a universal reg/rec as long as it had the same wires coming
out the back in a pinch, right?

Yes, it's an inline 16A fuse on the rectifier BLK wire that goes to the starter relay. The unit in the picture fried when the BLK wire was shorted to ground internally in the starter relay. You could use another rectifier if it had the same specs and inputs/output as the existing NipponDenso. This rectifier/regulator is used in several other bikes too; you can find it by running the NipponDenso part number. The three YEL wires are the generator output wires; the BLK wire is the regulated DC output. Even in my Rotax manual this fuse is present on the 500cc engines. -Don
