Plastic Chain Guard Necessary?

Postby comanche91 » Wed Oct 21, 2009 6:01 pm

When I got my SilverStar, it was missing the upper and lower middle plastic chain guard pieces. I've adjusted the chain, but it still slaps on the guard around the rear sprocket, especially when the engine is lugging below 3K RPM. Is this piece really necessary? Looks like the speedo cable screws into the rear piece too, as shown by the arrow. If I remove it can I still hook up the speedo cable? Thanks; Don

Hi,
Normally there are two rubber chain hoses/gaitors attached to the sprocket cover, these absorb any chain slap. Do you still have these?
New ones can be obtained from

Spares & Repairs
MZ House
20 Peregrine Close
Winsford
Cheshire
CW7 1SH.
UK
Tel +44 01606 593638

Or Burwins in London (who probably gets them from Fred Rogers anyway).
The sprocket cover contains a small worm gear that engages with a gear wheel on the sprocket/cush drive carrier. I'm not sure how you could arrange for alternative speedometer drive apart from an electronic sensor on the front wheel and a bicycle computer.
Is this what your asking?

Are these what you are referring to David? I do not have them, have never seen any, and they didn't come w. the bike. I ASSumed they were plastic. If they are rubber, I can see how they could take care of chain slap. To install these I'm guessing, the chain must come off under the front sprocket cover then rethreaded thru the new rubber pieces after installation then hooked back up and adjusted?

Hi,
Yes, those are what's needed but you'll have to make sure they are for the silver star as they are also used on all the early 2 stroke MZ's as well. Might be all the same length or different depending on the bike. I used to use a straightened out wire coat hanger with a small hooked end to pull the chain through the rubbers and then join the chain at the engine sprocket with the cover off.

Hello Don.

Absolutly recommended rubber chain guards.

I was thinking open a oil hole my rear sprocket guard-same model in your SilverStar (bakelite)- when I saw
a Bultaco Metralla guard.
Bultaco Metralla GT, GTS y Matador.jpg
Observe the correct oil hole position. centrifugal force make the work.

Problem, I have not good accessibility to rear sprocket guard because same side exhaust and a bag.
No problem for Bultaco: right side exhaust left side chain.

Saludos/Regards.

Thanks manumensa, I'm trying to run down a set now. I didn't even know they were rubber and functioned as a chain guide because they were missing on my Silver Star. I don't know how long they have been missing, but the chain has chewed up the rear sprocket guard a little bit. That Metralla is a beautiful Bultaco. Will that rear sprocket guard in your picture fit a Silver Star?

OUCH! Hopefully I can find a set of Silver Star chain rubbers that won't break my bank.

Recieved a reply from a vendor that stated the ETZ 250/251 and larger cc ETZ chain rubber tubes would fit the Silver Star, as they both use the same chain. Can anyone verify this? Thanks; Don

In investigating this further on the German MZ forum, the ETZ rubber tubes will work for the 500cc bikes, however the ID of the tube is slightly smaller than the original and causes friction, heat, and premature wear. And the original tubes for the 500cc bikes are no longer available. So it appears I'm screwed. I have a call into Fred Rogers in the UK and he thinks he can find some. I'm hopin' he can................

Hi,
As the rubber tubes normally accumulate a lot of grease/oil I can't imagine it will wear out any sooner than the wider type. These gaitors normally crack at the corrugated ends after a while anyway. They will afford some protection to the chain and the swinging arm. I'm assuming it was Martin at Burwins who suggested the ETZ ones as being suitable? Why not buy both types to make sure.
Something else you could do is ask on the MZ_RIDERS yahoo group

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mz_riders ... =330951138

to tap their collective wisdom. Many people on the above group have been around for many years and are real MZ enthusiasts.

Thanks David. Burwins, the AKF Shop in Germany, and the German MZ forum guys all stated that the larger ID 500cc gaitors (is that like out Gator? :D ) are not available anymore, even reproductions. Fred said he thought he had some and will call back Monday. So if Fred comes through, I'll get the correct ones from him and be in business. If he does not, then I'll get a set of the ETZ gaitors. But thanks to all the posts here, I do realize I should definitely have them installed. I'll check with the MZ_RIDERS Yahoo group too.
