Mobil 1 10W-30 Motor Oil Okay?

Postby comanche91 » Mon Oct 12, 2009 6:36 pm

Changing the oil and filter tomorrow in my Rotax 500, and have quite a bit of the subject oil. Okay to use in the Rotax engine and tranny? -Thanks

My first thought is NO! I don't know specifics about the Rotax motors, but basically all 10W-30 and lighter oils are not compatible with wet clutches, and certainly Mobil 1 10W-30 is not. Let alone I've not yet heard of a motorcycle engine that recommends anything lighter than a 40 weight.

I had no idea Walmart sold Rotella Motorcycle Oil! Shows how much I frequent the place. Thanks John, I'll go there tomorrow for that. I've always used dino oil in my Jeeps, but what the general consensus as to synthetics in the Rotax?

it a diesel truck oil i have used it in bikes for years
but with any oil for bikes read the current spec for what it does with wet clutches
i use it in the rt125 18,500 miles and still running original clutch plates ..there getting close to gone
on adjustment but still working ok .....no slip
and my saxon tour with rotax motor
10w 40 20w50

i had a fellow just last month tell me to check the spec on it as there are changes taking place
all the time with different grades and brands

Interesting. I've been using Chevron Delo 400 20/40 dino oil in my Jeeps for years, also a diesel oil w. a high zinc content. But never in a motorcycle. So the Rotella is a motorcyle specific oil?

Thanks guys. So Shell Rotella-T 15w40 it is. Synthetic version. Searching for "the best" 4-stroke motorcycle engine/tranny/clutch oil is a rat's maze of info where everyone has their own opinion. But I do trust the info from the MZ forum members above all others. :D

Well, I put in the Shell Rotella-T 10w40 Synth with a new Hi-Flow filter. And Dave, you're right; it's not hard, just freekin' messy. I made runway from the oil hose to the catch can with a piece of plastic and that helped. Pulled the sump pan and cleaned up the screen; it looked pretty good. Seems to shift a little smoother now too. One question: on the oil line banjo bolt where it hooks up to the frame tank, I ASSume there is supposed to be a copper washer on each side of the banjo, as like an auto brake line? I only had one on the bike, but I made another by boring out the hole a little in a new copper washer I had for an oil drain plug. Overall kind of a nit-picking job. It took a little over 3 qts.

Have to agree. With just a little extra designing expense from MZ (like a separate drain plug on the frame w. a nipple so you could attach a hose) it would be cake. The lower end isn't bad at all. Same with the front forks. How much would a drain plug cost for each leg? But I'm still liking the bike.........
