I have a Baggy SM and have gone down 1 tooth at the front. it now wheelies quite easily in first ,but I still struggle to get her up in second.. I reckon you would have to go up to a 45 rear to make it any easier :D

I have stock gearing in my baggy, and can carry very nice 2nd gear wheelies, recomend starting with very low revs, 2nd gear, prob 15-18 mph, quick clutch blip, and it is skyward!!

It must be either my size,13 stone, or just that I dont have the knack... wheelies fine in first ( within my limited skills in this department) , but can barely get the wheel to leave terra firma in second ( unless you throw in a hump backed bridge in which case it can wheely in third :-D ( nearly had me off the back last time at about 55mph  )

Seen you pull some neat 1st gear wheelies. 13 stone though, are you sure?

No matter the gearing, the real problem seems to me is that the rev limiter snuffs the spark just as the front wheel gets 6" off ground.

Unless someone can make a case against it, I'm planning on getting a higher rpm limiter from Bernd at Tunebike.de (Germany).

I'm open to arguments against it. Phlat?

I dont know if the Yamaha TDM 850 is sold state side, but the ignition box fits and works. This unit does not have a built in rev limiter (or if it does it operates at a lot higher rpm). If this bike is sold state side, try the motor cycle dismantlers.

Really!!! Awesome. There are some of those around. Maybe I can find one cheap to use temporarily. I dont want to eliminate my rev limit tho, just move it upward some.

more revs are not going to help you out. use the tourque of the motor at low revs to get the front up, try filming your technuique, biggest mistake most people make when attempting wheelies is to lean FORWARD!!!

try practicing on a bmx bike, or a small 4-stroke play bike 1st to get the feel of the ballance point. the higher you get the front wheel, the less power it takes to keep it there.

bumping up the rev limiter will not do much without other mods to match the increase in air flow.

thanks for the tips, phlat. I must be doing something wrong, although I had no problem standing my Rotax, SV or Falco on their tails in first. Of course they have better power/weight ratios.

Like I said, I can hoist the front on the throttle but in first it donks the rev limiter before getting high enough to balance. Maybe I need to practice using 2nd gear and the clutch...

dunno if it was just following your advice or whethr the new brisk spark plug that made a difference , but today I manged to get it to wheely in second.... Not very far yet, but now I know itwill get off the ground, I am much happier.

I also manged to get from first to second with the wheel up ,and I reckon with practice that this will be the way to go :D All I need is for the nice weather to hold for a few more days so I can practice :-)

My Mastiff wheelies off the throttle in first at about 12mph - ride it up to that speed and then spank the throttle open as if you were revving up at traffic lights next to a dick'ead car driver and up it comes.

Just keep practising that and you'll soon end up keeping the wheel in the air for longer and longer. When you get to a point where you start to run out of gear, click it into second and away ...
I'm too unimaginative to think of anything witty ...
